My brother kept talking about DU, so here I am checking it out. After a scary E-mail from a fundamentalist Christian cousin, it's nice to communicate with people that think like me. (Or think for themselves. Or just think period.)

Is there any hope for converting the evangelicals?

yes, there is some hope with the fundagelical Pharisees... at least some of them.

But keep in mind there are FAR more of us on the Spiritual Left, because we encompass more religions.

I used to be one. It can't be done by preaching to them, IMO. Just live your life around them and they'll come around. It's a slow process but, like good chili, it's worth it.

And, yes it is possible. As a minister and someone who knows a lot of former fundies, I speak from experience. THEY COME BACK TO REASON ALL THE TIME, little by little. So, our work is to be here for them when they finally figure it out. Welcome aboard and hope to meet you in lots of forums!

Sure you can convince some to come around. Others are too afraid they'll burn in hellfire if they don't vote against gays. But if they really believe in all that "teachings of Christ" stuff, an empassioned plea to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless might make them see that we, too, have God on our side.

There is hope in converting some evangelicals, IMHO. The best approach if an opportunity presents itself talk to them. Don't argue or debate. Just talk of everyday issues that affect everyone.

Some evangelicals convert themselves when they figure out that the behavior of their churches has little resemblence to the teachings of Jesus and a lot of resemblance to the "scribes and the Pharisees" that Jesus was always railing against.

Unless and until that happens, though, there's little hope. None so blind as those who will not see and all that.
