I do think you're being manipulated by marketing. (I'm at least ten years older than you, which entitles me to say all this :-) ) I see it in pop music, an industry whose biggest problem is retaining all their old consumers-- people who used to buy lots of CDs when they were in their teens or 20s, but now they have families and other responsibilities and no longer find anything on the radio terribly appealing. I'm convinced that much of the reason for Pink and Ashlee Whatzername and all these naive looking young female singers is to market them to men in their mid-life crises. (Not that young women don't also identify with some of them, like Avril Levigne, and not that some of them aren't genuinely talented, like Norah Jones.)

Or it could just be that all the people authorized to sign recording contracts at major labels are themselves guys in the mid-life-crisis demographic, and they're projecting their own desires and fantasies onto the mass market.
