Honestly, what are the chances that Bush could get away with a draft?
After virtually guaranteeing the American people that there wouldn't be one?

It would spell disaster for him and his party poltically.

Thoughts?

5. How can you declare the situation in Iraq to be a national emergency ?
Something disasterous would have to happen here in order for them to pull that off, and how would they justify sending the troops to Iraq?

16. It Will Be Called "Targeted Skills Conscription" (Mark My Words)
They will start to conscript people in small numbers at first... but only for "target" skills: computers, programming, medial, engineering, construction. Eventually one of the skills will be "cannon fodder" (or in this case "roadside-bomb-fodder")

He'll reinstate the draft, no problem. Actually WE NEED THE DRAFT!!! - just to get the poor guardsmen out of Iraq safe. I've said time and time again that no matter who was President we would need to reinstate the draft.

But now the forces of evil have no leash and he can continue his wars? Oil-Iran, Anyone?

8. I doubt Bush cares much about his party.
Sure, the Republicans will stand in his way, but Bush's goal is $$$, and he knows the Democrats won't stand in his way with serious threats of impeachment. If a draft is a means to getting a fatter wallet, then what's to stop him?

10. What are the other options?
He's isolated us from the rest of the world. More hostages being taken from other countries (and being beheaded) with demands to pull troops hardly make it a viable option for people who NEED their people's support to make decisions. Who is going to rally behind this ass who hasn't been able to get anyone to help us since he decided in the beginning of 2003 to go Iraq alone??

We've already got the national guard and reservists in Iraq, undertrained alternatives. Where do you think the rest of the troops are going to come from? We need more troops in there to do anything productive ... where will we get them?

11. Do you really think there's any accountability anymore?
- Bush isn't up for re-election, he's a lame duck. Wacko right wing fundamentalist extremism is going to become the norm for the next four years.

- Our election process is officially gone. Diebold and BBV guarantee Republican results with a great success rate now, as you can see.

Best as I can tell, the two party system is gone. We are a nation of right wing fundamentalist Christians and there's not enough of a Democratic party left in the WH, the House or the Senate to ever regain control of any of them. And the Supreme Court is going to be taken away too.

America is not a free country anymore.

I'd love to hear otherwise, but best as I can tell, if Bush wants a draft, he'll instate a draft. The Republican party will steal their votes and no one will ever be the wiser, except those of us whose votes are not counted.

18. Don't be naive
The ignorant morons who voted him back in office will follow him to the death. You better believe there will be a draft and it will be soon. And the war will get larger and involve more countries that we have no business invading. this is gonna spiral out of control. Bush believes he is the one to bring about WW 3 - he's a lunatic and he will do whatever he has to - to bring his grand scheme to fruition.

This is going to be a terrifying 4 years.

19. Heres why it won't happen:
1) Soldiers in the military due to the draft are unreliable. They dont fight well, dont take orders well. They will hurt, not help, any military campaign.

2) At least some high ranking GOP officials children will have to be drafed and go to combat in order to cover up that most of their children are getting a 'get out of draft free' card.

3) To many americans will instantly flip party voting if the draft gets reinstated.

4) By the time we get the draft up and running, soldiers drafted, trained and ready to go, the Iraq issue will have been decided one way or another.

5) It will alienate todays youth, thereby dimishing the long term prospects of the GOP. The GOP knows this.

24. Pretty good actually
I don't think we have seen the last of his private wars. He cannot continue to keep his war agenda with our current Military. More soldiers will be in order.

First I agree with the poster about "Targeted Skills Conscription". That will be the first step.

I have already read military papers stating that a drafted soldier is just as good in battle as a volunteer one. That won't be an issue.

The youth of America not liking the idea won't come into play either. Do you think Bush gives a shit? If he wants war it's war he will have. One way or another.

I am starting to buy into the concept that the man is the Anti-Christ!
Nah, that's too small he is Satan himself!

35. Puh-lease!
In order to re-instate the draft Rangel's stupid bill would have to get through both the house and the senate. It might make it through the house, but it would die in the senate. A filibuster here would look great for the democrats, and there are definitly enough republicans who dont support it. The GOP isn't entirely made up of neo-cons, yet.
