Do you consider my username homophobic?
There's obviously some controversy on here regarding my choice of a DU handle. I won't post the threads in which the controversy occurred, but apparently people consider it homophobic because Lemmiwinks was a gerbil who in a South Park episode was inserted into a gay man's ass by Mr. Garrison.

Mr. Garrison was brought back to teach 4th grade after being assigned to teach kindergarten, and he was told by the principal of South Park elementary that due to a new anti-discrimination law in Colorado, teachers cannot be fired for being gay. The principal said that they could not fire a teacher for being gay because that would result in lawsuits, and multimillion dollar verdicts against the school district.

Well, Mr. Garrison sets out to get fired for being gay, and does some things like inserting a gerbil into his "slave's" ass, in an attempt to get fired for being gay so he can then sue the school. The gerbil's name is Lemmiwinks.

The gerbil then goes on a quest inside the dude's body and eventually gets out at the end and becomes the gerbil king!

This is why some people have a problem with my choice of name and the origin of it I think, but I don't consider it homophobic.

I just found the episode hilarious and when I decided to join up today I thought that this would be a great nickname.

Considering the context of this, do you think my name is homophobic? I didn't find it funny becuase it was inserted into a gay man's ass. It would have been just as funny if it had been inserted into a straight man's ass, and I feel that some people are making too big a deal of this. But they have the right to their opinion of course and I was just wondering what other DUers thought of my choice of a nickname.

I didn't expect all this controversy. I would have thought that most people would realize that South Park is just satire, and that people on the show make fun of everyone, and that the gerbil or the story is not homophobic.

I mean, jeez, the people satirized the most in South Park are the "ignorant rednecks"(satire) who populate the small, mountain town.

ROFL.

See, misunderestimator, already two responses that say it's not homophobic.

Just ride this one out, everything is a little tense now, but should be fine soon:)

19. Matter of context issue then, IMO
The episode did deal with homophobia, in SPs typically back-handed way. Mr. Garrison was trying to get fired for 'being gay' so he could later sue the school and state. In doing so, he took everything to the utmost extreme, and I saw the entire "Lemmiwinks crawls through someone's internals" bit as a slap in the face of people who believe these things actually go on.

23. That's exactly the way I took it DS1
Edited on Sat Oct-30-04 06:38 PM by Lemmiwinks
In fact, if you look at the thread where I argued with Misunderestimator, I mentioned the word "context" at least 5 times when telling her that context must be used to determine homophobia.

If an obviously homophobic person like Pat Robertson used this episode in a campaign then obviously it would be a homophobic use of it, but if anyone really believes that I joined up here just to start an anti-homophobic rant then they are being delusional.

I have better things to do then attack gay people for who they are.

South Park is a satire. The people they make fun of the most are the "ignorant rednecks" who populate SP.

By the way, I've asked Misunderestimator to produce a link to a post where I spouted something homophobic. She still hasn't done so. I think that says a lot.
