Poll question: The Worst Thing About Halloween
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 06:03 PM by Chovexani
Halloween and I have a rather love/hate relationship. On one hand I love it because it's the one day of the year when people don't stare at me. There's candy, which is always cool. And I love raiding costume/party supply warehouses on Nov. 1. But OTOH I hate it because it tends to bring out the inner douchebag in some, not to mention it sort of irks me that the same people who wear lame costumes on Halloween make fun of cosplayers and Ren geeks the other 364 days of the year. What do you hate about Halloween?

1. Parties.
Seriously, I have to go to this one that is going to be like 10 people just standing around in costumes. God. How awkward.

2. Nothing worse than a lame Halloween party
Luckily I hang out with some pretty insane people so I've never really had to suffer through one.

Maybe you should bring a bong? :smoke:

5. It is not so bad if it is 50+ people, or one that is hosted at a bar
or something, everyone dresses up on costumes. But this is some small get together, which would be fun, but throw the costumes in there and it is lame.

3. The worst thing?
That people look at me all cross-eyed and like some kind of kill-joy when I tell 'em I don't do the costume, party, or candy thing, because in my religion Samhain one of our highest holidays and we like to celebrate it our own way -- with dignity and respect.

*shrugs*

11. I hear you.
Actually I think I'll go back and include that as a poll option.

I'm solitary but I go to a local public circle for Samhain every year, but I also go to the Witches' Ball and pass out candy to neighborhood kids. But I respect those that don't do the candy-n-costumes thing in favor of keeping it totally solemn. That doesn't make you a kill-joy. To each his/her own.

4. people limit the candy their kids can actually eat

feeding the rest of it to their coworkers, making us hyper and fat.

Why do people stare at you? I WILL KICK THEIR ASSES. I have a severely autistic brother and when we were kids I was constantly yelling at rude kids and adults who would stare at him. I'm guessing it created Skittles.

12. Thanks for the thought, but it's my own fault I get stared at
I'm a goth and my usual wardrobe choices make me look like an undead pirate most of the time. On Halloween people always tell me I have such great costumes, and they don't really get it when I ask "what costume?!". :P

But I appreciate the thought. Skittles would KICK SOMEONE'S ASS for me! I'm in heaven. :loveya:

14. I dunno
I think it's rude to stare at people no matter what. Sure, I'll make the occasional glance at someone who is "different" (I find the Goth look quite fascinating - like the guy who made my Subway Sandwich today had painted black fingernails under his see-through disposable gloves) - but to outright stare at someone, well that f***ing rude. I WILL KICK THEIR ASSES. :D

8. You forgot
You forgot

Local TV stations giving parents pointers on how to inspect their child's loot for razor blades. Better yet is when they show candy going through a metal detector that some local civic place donates the use of.

10. Not being invited to any parties
Lame-ass or otherwise.

The first time this happened, I was 12, and I was the only one in my class that wasn't invited -- deliberately -- to the big annual Halloween party that Annie Hollister (and her parents) gave.

Oh well. I'll weep my bitter tears in silence, I guess.

13. You're not alone
I'm a loner and for most of my life I've had few friends. I was also the kid that never got invited to anything. The worst was my 7th birthday. My mom never had birthday parties for me or anything as a kid but she wanted to do something special so she rented this arts and crafts store for the day and had all these fun activities planned. No one showed up except my cousin, because a popular kid had his birthday party the same day (his birthday was the day after mine). At school on Monday I had to endure all the laughing about that loser party no one went to.

That's the kind of thing that puts a person in therapy later in life.

17. Damn fundies are Trick or Treating in our town
...on Saturday night. So, either we have candy on both nights, or we leave the house one or both nights and get our yard messed up. Some choice.

18. Fundies get on my damn nerves
This Halloween on Saturday nonsense is a perfect example of the twisted logic and hypocrisy fundies are all about. I mean, if Halloween is a Satanic thing (and it's not), wouldn't it be a sin to trick or treat at all no matter what day you did it on? The mind boggles.

There's a bunch of fundies in my neighborhood and boy does it make life interesting. Back during the huge blackout last year I was supplying candles to pretty much my entire street, a lot of these people are fundies that are constantly turning their nose up at me because I openly wear a pentacle. I was all like, "whose religion sucks NOW?!" :P

Last year there was an adorable set of twin boys that came to my house trick-or-treating dressed like the Super Mario Bros. When I gave them candy I peeked in their bags and the poor kids had been given Chick tracts by one of my insane neighbors. I made sure to give them extra candy.

32. Mine too.
My kids have got those Chick tracts, too, and it really pisses me off. If you don't like Halloween, don't answer the friggin' door, but could you stop pissing on everyone else's fun?

And no kidding about the hypocrisy of fundies going trick-or-treats at all... :wtf:

Poor thing. You would get along great with my mom. I'm a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan and she can't even deal with that as tame as it is. When the reruns come on FX she leaves the room cause she just can't take it. I think it's the vampires' lumpy heads.

I'm only partly scared by the movies. Mostly, I just can't stand the violence being done to people in those things. But the, this is coming from someone who can't even watch the fake pro wrestling because of the body slams!

Tell your mom she's not alone!

I went out as a teen myself. I meant the lazy bastards who go trick or treating in their regular clothes and demand candy. That's just lame and...NO CANDY FOR YOU! COME BACK, ONE YEAR!

I'm thinking of daytripping to PA on Election Day with some other New Yorkers that are running bus trips to the swing state in our backyard all weekend. I would go on the weekend but I already have plans.

But I will still do some drunken gaming to celebrate that night. Kerry in a landslide!

22. I've never experienced Halloween
the way Americans celebrate it (since I'm an aussie).
But it has always seemed like a lot of fun.

After reading through the other messages, and other things I have heard, I don't understand why some people try and kill other peoples fun. I mean "who cares" how or what some people enjoy? Especially if those people are having harmless fun.

It seems they need to just get a life, and leave everyone else alone to have their fun.

I'd be one of those healthy treats/toys people if I was giving out stuff this year. I'm not bothering since no one ever comes to our apartment.

30. I wonder why!
J/K. :) There's nothing wrong with eating healthy treats but...Halloween is for bouncing off the walls from sugar! :silly: Toys are a pretty cool alternative to candy, even if they're cheap Happy-Meal type things. When I was a kid the old lady across the street from me used to give out little toys and trinkets like friendship bracelets and stuff and no one ever egged her house.

33. Yeah I knew some one would say that.
:)

I've only lived here for two years. No one came on the first year, so I'm predicting about the same for this year. Maybe I'll get some thing, but I don't want to get a bunch of candy. From my experience I always end up eating it because hardly anyone shows up. I would never buy all that candy otherwise.

34. I understand that.
2002 we didn't have very many kids come to the door so last year we didn't get that much candy. And of course tons of kids showed up. :silly:

I've got a house full of people with crazy sweet tooths so having a lot of candy around can be dangerous, LOL. I get Halloween candy the day of, and even then it has to be hid before the kids show or else it'll never make it. I'm talking Lord of the Flies stuff!
