And when I woke up, everyone I'd been with was calling me "Shortbus". Apparently I kept saying it over and over again. I do like the sound. It's getting old--that was seven years ago and I'm still called SB exclusively by certain people.

As far as I know it has nothing to do with the "differently abled". I did ride a short bus to high school from the rural area where I lived.

46. It's an "OPSIG"
An operating signal. They are a concise way of passing detailed information to other communications personnel - as an added bonus, they are an "international language" since for the most part, the OPSIGS mean the same thing no matter what language you speak.

qnr is an aviation OPSIG, meaning "I am approaching my point of no return" --- basically, if I go any farther, I won't have enough fuel to return and will have to find a different landing site. I use it to describe my mental/emotional state.

I've been using since 1981 (from computer BBSs and GEnie through IRC and on the web) -- I'm an inveterate "nickname changer" so I used to tack <QNR> on all my nicks, like "Coastie <QNR>"

I used to have a list of thousands of guess as to what QNR meant (before I started explaining... stupid things, but funny (to me): Quite Nicely Rich, Quite Not Right, stuff like that.

Some other OPSIGS

I've always liked the way she appears to understand human nature. Joan Hickson played her in the BBC movies and did an incomparable job. I have quit reading the books and now watch the movies. She died in 1998 at the age of 92.

This was written after she died.

62. The story, oh the story, of my name. You want the long story, or...
...the short version?

The long version, you say? Great!

Well, when I became single, I reverted to my maiden name, and since I was getting a court order on that one, I decided to change my name. I dropped my married name and also dropped my first name. I now use my middle name with maiden name. Confused yet? You ought to talk to my mother. She's had a hard time with it, too.

Okay, so Elizabeth is a long name, and I love it, but wasn't used to it. I knew that unless I stepped in to create a "nickname," I'd be called Liz or Beth or Betty or... well, you get the picture. One of my fellow teachers suggested Elle. And I sort of liked that.

So, one night I was in a bar and figured I'd give it a try. I met a great guy who asked me the "what's your name?" question. So I trotted out, "Elizabeth, but-you-can-call-me Elle." Then he said (and I love him for this).... "If you're using letters, why not ZEE?"

And it stuck. Everyone called me Zee. I really like it a lot. I'm even Grandma Zee now and it's great. Yeah, I know, I'm too young to be a grandma, but it's my husband's daughter's son. (Yeah, silly me, I got married again -- but I kept my name!)

Anyway... I'm an English professor. I used to teach online at AOL. I used DrLit for my screen name. I needed something new so I added the Zee.

Okay, that's the long story. I felt like telling a story. You know how English teachers are about writing and stories.

Kerry On.

64. Skittles is a 26 pound solid black bundle of feline love
he lives with my ex-boyfriend - Skittles instantly became a farm cat when I moved there and most defintely wanted to stay when I left; I still see him from time to time.

Skittles was a 7 pound tarving stray with a leg so dislocated the bone was showing - Tombo and I split the high cost of the surgery (pin in his leg, cast for weeks).

I named him - yes, after the candy. When I first met Tombo he had a candy machine on his desk I would constantly fill up with Skittles.

written by St Francis of Assisi:

Most high, all powerful, all good Lord! All praise is yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing. To you, alone, Most High, do they belong. No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name.

Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and you give light through him. And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor! Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness.

Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens you have made them, precious and beautiful.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, and clouds and storms, and all the weather, through which you give your creatures sustenance.

Be praised, My Lord, through Sister Water; she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure.

Be praised, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you brighten the night. He is beautiful and cheerful, and powerful and strong.

Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Mother Earth, who feeds us and rules us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs.

Be praised, my Lord, through those who forgive for love of you; through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy those who endure in peace, for by you, Most High, they will be crowned.

Be praised, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death, from whose embrace no living person can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Happy those she finds doing your most holy will. The second death can do no harm to them.

Praise and bless my Lord, and give thanks, and serve him with great humility.

But, I had always had an online name of JeffCT999 or JeffCT1966 or something like that. However, after a job change in 2001, I lost all the passwords related to that name (I used to auto-login). And, since I wanted people to hopefully remember who I was when I posted on various online boards, I came up with "NewJeffCT" and have used it since.

Mine should have been "Behind the Aegis" but I wasn't watching my typing. Although, I have found that some do accept Ageis. Mine is the name of the shield created by Zeus and given to his favorite child, Athena, goddess of wisdom, justice, the arts, and warfare. Nothing can penetrate the Aegis! Not even lies! Thus, I stand "behind the Aegis" as protection from lies and deception and use it to protect others from attacks.

Bread and Circuses keep the proles under control.

I Couldn't fit Achtung Bread and Circuses into the space available, decided that for most people the world is more about a circus than it is about bread.

So.....

lookout, the world is crazy.

If you can follow that logic, you're either very creative or very drunk.

that absolutely loved beer. Seriously, I don't know how he came across this love because I never fed it to him, but whenever I cracked one open he would sit there and whine like he had been in the desert for three weeks and this was ice cold water.

Anyway one night I gave him some local brew called Downtown Brown, and he drank it and started to howl in ecstasy. He often howled, but this was just so bizarre. I repeated the trick other times for various guests and he did the same thing thing every time. It got a lot of laughs. So in his honor (he passed away three years ago at the age of 13) I became Downtown Hound.

122. Not because of English
is the first thing I say! So many think it's a reference to grammar.

I worked for a good while in the Entertainment industry, and in shop talk, most notably in accounting, there is a division between labor on television or film--one is above the line, which includes directors, writers, actors, producers, and other such luminaries, and below the line includes everyone from the production assistants to the craft services guys.

In a production, if someone works more than one "job" (usually above the line people), like someone directing who also wrote the script, he/she is called a "hyphenate" as in writer-director-producer. A hyphenate can have anywhere from 2 on up titles and jobs, depending on how much he/she likes to be in control. So essentially, my title means I can't just do one thing at a time, I have to be doing lots of things.

136. Mine is a Romani word
I came across it while doing some research into the family tree...it's a word derived from Armenian that means "witch". It just jumped out and me and I thought it fit, because I am one.

FYI, it's pronounced "cho-vay-SHA-knee". Not even Mike Malloy could pronounce it, LOL. :)

If I could do it over again, I would probably change it. I just wanted to register as quickly as possible, and End of all Hope happened to be blasting on my headphones at that very moment, so...

Mandylion without a face
Deathwish without a prayer
End of hope
End of love
End of time
The rest is silence

It is the end of all hope
To lose the child, the faith
To end all the innocence
To be someone like me

157. Ha! blonde here too!
And, no, the my hair only matches my spirit. I became blonde when I moved into a new place, worked all day and all evening, and got acquainted with a bottle of wine and a drugstore box of "Be Blonde" (or something like that, it was on sale) I had had for a while. The results were not so good. My handy-dandy hair person fixed my boo-boo, and I've been blonde ever since. It is a little tough on the pocketbook sometimes.

But, my user name: I'm PISSED OFF and in my family "put out" is the polite way to say it. My candidate in 2000 got put out of his rightful place as my country's leader. I got put out of the process of a fair and honest election. I had to sit and watch as the shenanigans took place and live with the results.

I didn't consider the sexual connotations until after I registered.

161. Mine refers to my return to the Democratic party
I started out as a Democrat when I started voting in 1971 but in 1976 I went over to the "dark side". After 28 years in Republand I untied the half of my brain which was tied behind my back (just to make it fair) and saw what a mess the current administration has made of almost everything. Fiscal responsibility in a government has always been important to me but I realized belatedly that tax cut and spend is more irresponsible than tax and spend could ever be.

169. I would be Vixen69--
but on most forums I can't be, because it's either taken or considered rude--which is partially why I like the handle. There's a "Bitch Test" on-line somewhere which includes the idea that you are a bitch if you have a name with either vixen or 69 or something else in it--but it started as a tribute. The reasons for the handle have grown. "Vixen" was what Methos called Amanda in Highlander. I like foxes. I'm a top-heavy redhead (very vixen-y). "69" was the number Bill and Ted were thinking of in their "Excellent Adventure". "69" also suggests the yin-yang symbol, and balance. "Vixen" is a Russ Meyers movie. "69" is, gasp, a sexual position...and on and on. But I use "vixengrl" (not capitalized) because it's close and the grl is kind of like riotgrl and it's feministy and stuff.

Refers to my profession. For the last XX number of years, I have worked in very highly regulated industry's. Human implants, Space, & defense microelectronics. Mil-Specs, used to be my bread & butter as dull as they are. Milspec refers to test methods & standards that devices need to comply with. Most of them (both FDA & Defense) have replaced Milspec with ISO (international Standards) But I've been using this name for a Loooog time & I can always remember it!

186. It's from a scene in the movie "To Sir With Love"
when they all get on the bus to go to the museum, the bus destination says "BARKING 23"...the Barking is for that part of London.

It came about because at Clinton's first inauguration party Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant sang the song "To Sir With Love". They did it justice and that was a very happy time.

On Indian lands in California, Arizona and New Mexico. The dogs are very defensive of their territory, but are very friendly and are terrific animals.

I have an abiding interest in Indian art, and I collect Navajo weavings, Zuni fetishes, and Hopi katsinas.

Thus, the name. :)
