YOUR TOP TEN RECORDS OF 2004?
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 06:02 AM by mahayasmellbad
Well, maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself. Either way, the year's practically over and I felt like broadcasting the God awful truth to all who have eyes w/ which to see. The problem however is that I can't think of ten records released over the past year that have impressed me enough to make it on some silly list on some silly thread that will sink as though it just ratted on the mafia or something.

Oh well.

10) Joanna Newsom - The milk-eyed mender
09) Papa M - Hole of burning alms
08) Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the hands/Nino rojo
07) Tom Waits - Real gone
06) Prince - Musicology
05) Sufjan Stevens - Seven swans
04A.) Some people really like Interpol for some reason. why is this? I caught them on Conan a few weeks ago and the singer just seemed to be trying to channel Ian Curtis the whole time so whats the big deal. It's not as though he's some brilliant lyricist with a wild exciting new twist on love, loss and blahblahblah.
04B.) Elliott Smith - From a basement on the hill, in interviews was slated to be his--ahem--'white album'. excellent songwriting, but voice a little thin and final sequencing left something to be desired.
03) The Cure suck a small one 15 years straight. That is what I call consistency.
02) A lot of people in my sphere of association who enjoy the Shins' work also happen to like the Walkmen and Franz Ferdinand. And Interpol. And Les Savy Fav. I like none of them. I might just not like rock music but there's no way to really prove this. Also as we all know there's no accounting for bad taste :(
01) Did Mandy Moore release a record this year? Depending on the lighting she kind of has a pleasing face as long as she doesn't bare her teeth

OK your turn

2. Uber-ditto on Tom Waits' 'Real Gone'
Tom Waits is one of the few artists that I feel totally confident about when buying his latest release.

3. I don't know that I can think of ten, but I'll try.
No particular order:

Tom Waits - "Real Gone"

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - "Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus" (a double album. does that mean it gets two spots?)

The Streets - "A Grand Don't Come For Free"

Björk - "Medulla"

Morrissey - "You Are The Quarry"

Air - "Talkie Walkie"

All right, that's six. More than I was expecting when I started. This hasn't been a great year for music, but there have been a few bright spots.

7. There weren't ten good albums this year.
I'll give it up for five or six:

The Liars: They Were Wrong So We Drowned
Oneida: Secret Wars
Don Copenhaver: Letters from Jail
Sonic Youth: Sonic Nurse
Bjork: Medulla
Fiery Furnaces: Blueberry Boat

I was seriously disappointed by releases from alleged big guns like Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Radio 4 and the Faint (actually, that's disingenuous - I expected the Faint to suck ass), and I haven't yet heard the recent Wilco, Elliot Smith, or Modest Mouse, mostly because I don't care, but since everyone's seeing god over those records I'll give them a chance eventually. TV on the Radio were great live, but I haven't heard the record yet.

8. I find it remarkable that Sonic Nurse is included among the years best
especially since I haven't bothered to listen to it. Murray St was pretty enjoyable though.

The Faint never fail to suck ass.

Bonnie McKee - Trouble
The Corrs - Borrowed Heaven
R.E.M. - Around The Sun
A.C. Newman - Slow Wonder
