Poll question: Best Drug Song?
I picked "Slow Death" by the Groovies, because it just plain kicks ass. Your milage may vary.

13. an excerpt from the lyrics...
The sky was gold, it was rose
I was taking sips of it through my nose
And I wish I could get back there
some place back there
Smiling in the pictures you would take
Doing crystal meth
will lift you up until you break
It won't stop, I won't come down
I keep stock
With a tick tock rhythm
A bump for the drop
And then I bumped up
I took the hit that I was given
Then I bumped again

Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 06:50 PM by tjdee
That's one of my top albums of all time.

I can't vouch for the actual talent displayed, or the actual "goodness" of the band, but every damn song on that album is catchy as hell. Something about it is so summery and irresistible.

Narcolepsy..God of Wine...Semi-Charmed Life...In the Background....Burning Man...lost my copy, I gotta get me a hold of that CD again. Only like three songs on the second album, the third I've not heard.

8. Grace Slick.
WHITE RABBIT (G. Slick)
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall.

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.

Call Alice
When she was just small.
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low.
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know.

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head"

17. Is "Cloud Nine" by the Temptations a drug song?
I've always wondered that.(partial lyrics below) I voted for Heroin, love that Lou Reed.

"Folks now they tell me.
They say, give yourself a chance and don't let life pass you by.
But the world around you is a rat race.
Where only the strong survive.
It's a dog-eat-dog world and that ain't no lie. (Ain't no lie)
Listen, it ain't even safe no more, to walk the streets at night.

Eddie: I'm doing fine on Cloud 9.
Dennis: Let me tell you about Cloud 9.

(Cloud 9)Paul: You can be what you wanna be.
(Cloud 9)Dennis: You ain't got no responsibility.
(Cloud 9)Eddie: Every man, every man is free.
(Cloud 9)Dennis: You're a million miles from reality.

(Reality) I'm gonna sail (up, up) higher (up, up... up, up and away) Cloud 9."

Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 06:45 PM by ProudGerman
Hurt by NIN is what I vote for. Don't know which version I like better, Trent's original, or Johnny Cash's cover.

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become ?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become ?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

21. Rollercoaster by 13th Floor Elevators
also covered well by Jesus and Mary Chain to stay topical and one of the greatest drug bands ever, the Spacemen 3.

Rollercoaster
Well I met someone some time ago
His eyes were clear to see
He showed me things in my own mind
That I wish all the world could see
He stopped me from living so insane
I can be just what I wanna be
Things appear as they really are
I can see just what I want to see

Well come on, and let it happen to you
Well come on, and let it happen to you
You gotta open up your mind and let everything come through

Well it starts like a rollercoaster ride
So real it takes your breath away
It slides you through your point of view
You look back to where you thought you’d stay
When your ride changes you
Exactly like a neon ray
You don’t have to search for words anymore
There’s nothing you need to say

Well come on, and let it happen to you
Well come on, and let it happen to you
You gotta open up your mind and let everything come through

After your trip, life opens up
You start doing what you wanna do
You find out that the world that you once feared
Gets what it has from you
No-one can ever hurt you
Because now you know more than you thought you knew
You’re looking at the world with brand new eyes
And no-one can ever spoil the view

Well come on, and let it happen to you
Hey, hey, hey well come on, you gotta let it happen to you
You gotta open up your mind and let everything come through

Just open up your mind
And let everything come through

40. 13th Floor Elevators! Thought I was the only person alive
Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 08:53 PM by DrBB
...who still (or ever?) knew that band. Didn't know J&MC had covered them--they just went up in my estimation. Long live the forgotten kings of Texas psychedelia!

And what WAS that weird sound they had in the background of ALL their songs....?

Answer (on edit): an electrified jug (as in jug band). I thought I'd remembered that, but had to check. Great picture here, ca. 1965:

Dig that groovy band logo on the bass drum!

45. Tommy Hall played the electric jug
He was also the "theorizer" of the Elevator. He's been found living & San Francisco & not doing well (still dropping every Friday):

www.popeye-x.com/antippx9/0000011f.htm

Roky Erickson was the voice & soul of the Elevators. The cover of "Reverberation" comes from "Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: Tribute to Rocky Erickson". The CD includes some of Roky's post-Elevator songs ("I Walked with a Zombie"/REM) along with Elevator classics ("You're Gonna Miss Me"/the late great Doug Sahm).

48. Found this Roky Erickson website
http://www.erickson.com/

Not much there--discography mainly. Interesting that "creator & owner" of the site is credited to Eric Erickson--son? relative? Copyright is 1998 so it's not the most actively updated site on the web, but the guestbook pages have messages from as recent as a couple of days ago. Gotta love the web--bringing people together (and reminding us of bands we haven't thought about in 30 years!).

54. Run, don't walk
to the nearest cool music store in your area and find a copy of the most likely tribute record, Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye, a tribute to Roky Erickson. Where you will find that I am an idiot and the song that Jesus and Mary Chain covers is Reverberation, NOT Roler Coaster. That aside, it is an exceptional tribute disk. The T-Bone Burnett take is incredible and Two-headed dog is amazing. Sahm's You're Gonna Miss Me is God.

59. Yes--I was just reading about that CD
I"m truly stunned. Another guy in my band discovered these guys in 1972--we had a copy of their 1st album (Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators). For years (and years) they've been the band I could be sure no one else would have heard of if I mentioned them at a party or whatever.

I guess if you wait long enough, everything gets churned up and gone over again.

24. "Blinded by the Light" by Bruce Springsteen?
I don't know if it's a drug song, but I suspect the only way that song makes sense is if you're high. Ah, what fun with rhyming that song is!

"And now in Zanzibar a shootin' star was ridin' in a side car hummin' a lunar tune
Yes, and the avatar said blow the bar but first remove the cookie jar, we're gonna teach those boys to laugh too soon
And some kidnapped handicap was complaining that he caught the clap from some mousetrap he bought last night
Well I unsnapped his skull cap and between his ears I saw a gap but he'd figured he'd be all right

He was just blinded by the light. Cut loose like a deuce
Another runner in the night. Blinded by the light
Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun
Oh but mama that's where the fun is"

Like that version by...whatever band that was in the 70s.

Y un raton de sacristan.

Con las barbas de Carranza,

69. "Shanty" by Jonathan Edwards
Fill it, light it, shut up, and close the door

Every night and every day if we can help it.
We're gonna lay around the shanty and put a good buzz on.
