Yipes, I'm staying out of GD for a while!
Took a break last night and returned this morning. Well, returned to DU - staying out of the General Discussion (GD) forum!

I got caught up in an argument (not the Green one, which was really more of a two-way discussion than an argument) and I said a few things I was ashamed of. I think one of my responses got deleted just because of the final sentenence but I was really fed up at the point. (I felt that was extreme, but it was my fault for not quickly going back to edit out the sentence.)

So, I'm staying out of GD for a while, I don't want to end up being that severe ever again.

And I put all the blame on myself, my original message was limited to one topic and then on a reply I expounded on a semi-unrelated tangent without relating it to the original topic or even proving examples of my claims (which I did have plenty of on my archived personal website, I was just too annoyed to start posting all the URLs - again, another big mistake on my part.)

Besides, I'm supposed to be recovering from the stomach flu, not twisting my stomach in angst! :D

If any of you get riled up in GD, what do you do to cool down?

Thanks!

1. You're not to blame! It's the GOP Media Whores fault!

If they'd start doing their jobs or be put in jail for racketeering we wouldn't have to be the only Democrats in the USA with spines! Besides Dean.

Everyone who cares and is patriotic for our country is frustrated because the scum just keep getting away with it. (Even though the truth is out there.)

2. NIce sentiment, but
I'd brought up an 'atypical issue' for GD.

In a way, it's the media's fault for not bringing up REAL issues to the people. They can do it far more consistently (and perhaps coherently) than I could.

3. Oh yes, I "get riled up in GD" on a regular basis especially.....
...with that one subject that divides liberals these days. Sometimes I get caught up in the ongoing argument before noticing it is time for a break. Other times I can simply ignore the thread, at least for a while, and go on to something else.

In the end though it all comes down to needing a break. My mood at the moment determines how long that break needs to be. To truly get it out of my system though I go build, repair, or clean something. When I finish some hours later I need a cool shower and then I'm good to go again.

It's too scary in there.

5. Blow'em off ~
I sure as hell don't buy an extra shot of whiskey. That I save for the birth of new grandchildren. Just don't try to explain to some jackass in GD that food is a miracle of the 1st order and part of the tree of life.

Now there is a daunting process indeed ~

6. I try not to let GD rile me up too bad
Every once in a while it happens, though. When it does, I usually cool down in the lounge. I don't think I've ever seen a flame war in the lounge. Well, I've seen people get dressed down a little for posting insensitive remarks, but nothing on the level of GD.

8. If you did something you don't think was right
You should e-mail the people on the board who you were arguing with and apologize.

I've always been a believer that we are responsible for our own actions. So if someone did something wrong, and you did something wrong, you are responsible for rectifying your wrong, regardless of what they do.

Good luck, and it is good to have a conscious. Many people's are greatly deformed (Rummy, Ashcroft,Rice, Powell, Cheney, Bush).

9. GD is a GREAT place, but........................................
You must pick your topics wisely.. If you have a short fuse, and you KNOW that a topic will set it off, just skip that one..

Seriously... infighting and trashing each other does NOTHING to advance our "cause"..

remember too, that there are some here who live to antagonize others.. When you play their game, THEY win...:)

The lounge is a nice respite, but there are lots of great topics "out there" that you miss if you never go there :)

13. Good observations.

Some people get extremely transparent. Their writing style changes completely when they're losing their cool. Insults and projecting is the kiddie stuff. But what is really amusing is when their vocabulary and sentence structure changes from one paragraph to the next. You can almost follow their BP ratings.

(PS: I like GD. The biggest problem I have is finding time to give it justice.)

12. Why of course, cool down in the lounge!
There is always something silly here...

Actually it's probably best to get away from the computer. I have a dog who likes to go for long brisk walks, and she'll always tell me when it's time to go; in fact she will try to get between me and the computer when I'm at my very worst green giant Hulkiness.

I get a lot of exercise that way, and walking always clears my head.

Peace
