To All of My Fellow Yankees Fans - Let's Congratulate The Boston Red Sox
and their faithful fans. Their undying loyalty should be admired by all sports fans of every stripe. Red Sox fans are the most ardent fans that I have ever seen for any team, professional or amateur. So, congratulations Red Sox and their fans.

As for us, well there is a burden to being a Yankees fan. People will and do hate us. Why? Because we're the most successful sports franchise in history, and everyone guns for us. Sooner or later, someone is going to break through and beat us like the Red Sox did. Thus, this is the problem of being a fan for the greatest team in sports history. When we lose, we will get mocked and ridiculed mercilessly, esp. the way in which we lost this series. If you don't want that burden, root for the Mets. No one ever mocks them because no one cares about them.

But fret not. I'd still rather be a fan of the Yankees, a team that has brought me more thrills than any true fan really deserves. Yes, we're in the record books as the team that lost a 3-0 lead, but we're also in those same books as the team that has won 26 World Series titles and 39 American League pennants.

So, tonight we'll eat humble pie, but soon, very soon, we'll be sipping the victory champagne once more.

1. why should we congratulate the Sox......
THEY ARE LOSERS AND THEY ALWAYS WILL BE.....

Since the Babe Ruth Trade:

Yankees: 26 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Red Sox: 0

So they finally beat the yanks in the ALCS....big deal....as a yankee fan i am happy they won tonight just so i can see the Sox fuck it once again in the World Series....cant wait to see that!

3. The above post illustrates...
why you rarely see the words "Yankee fan" and "class" in the same sentence.

4. Dude, They Beat Us But Good
You have to give them their due. They came back from 3-0. I can't stand some of their fans as well. Hell, they completely took over one of my favorite bars in NYC, but I have to give them respect tonight.

8. You have to give them their due?
WHY? Sox fans never gave the yanks their dur the past 85 years....I hate the Sox and in my mind they are still losers....just watch the World Series and they will screw up in a way that has never been seen before like only the Sox can do.

Sox did not beat the yanks...yanks beat themselves these past 4 games...I give the Sox no credit. Never will!

20. it's called "sportsmanship" . . . used to be the norm in this country . .
but these days it seems to be a lost art . . . the Sox did something unheard of in baseball, and they did it on guts and heart . . . they deserve all the praise they're receiving, and congratulations from every true sports fan . . . I'll be rooting for them in the Series and looking forward to them ending that stupid curse business once and for all . . .

28. dude, find a little grace somewhere

That ball didn't fly into the stands for a grand slam tonight without a little bit of Red Sox talent. Face it, the Sox' offense was brutal on other teams this year (900+ runs in the regular season) and it was only a matter of time before your boys took a beating at its hands...or two, or three, or four.... I hope that lets you snap out of the denial just a little bit. Personally, it's that sneer on Derek Jeter's face that always bugs me. And yes, Steinbrenner's and Torre's gazillion dollar gamble on A-Rod has not anywhere close to paid off and looks like it never will.

5. too bad you are not gracious considering we yankees had a
player try to cheat by knocking the ball out of the players hand on purpose - the red soxs deserve a win and I will be cheering for them to win the series -

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

if you use some metaphorical perspective, you can imagine that the Yanks are the losing Republican convention turning to tears after the shock of the stomp that comes from Massachusets.

22. Technically, that isn't true,
and I only bring it up since you stated it so forcefully. Both New York and New Jersey, plus Nova Scotia, were once considered part of "New England"

9. Well I'm not going to mock you, Yavin4
I don't believe in doing that.

I think you are correct about the Red Sox having great fans. They've stuck with them and sold out stadiums when things didn't look so good for them. And to do that after 85 years of frustration. Hell, my Reds won back in 1990, but now that we are going through hard times the stadium is lucky to be half full for their ball games.

I don't buy this "it's hard being a Yankees fan" stuff, though. It's probably pretty hard tonight, but they win so often that it really can't be that hard.

What with hitchhiking, the military, and other traveling, I've lived in or spent significant time in all fifty states, and I can assure you, it can be "hard being a Yankees fan" :)

26. I agree...

I'm a die hard Red Sox fan (almost died a hundred times this series alone) and I wear an official NY Yankees cap alot and even did it when I went back last Christmas (2002 - I live in Seattle now - ICHIRO! and GAR!) and wore my hat and it IS hard being a Yankee fan sometimes.

As an aside, I bought the cap in 2001 when the Yanks beat the Mariners after a 116 win season delayed by SEP-11. Why oh why do the teams I always root for lose and that's when I got my bright idea and bought that cap and both the UCONN Huskies (men and women) Basketball team and the Patriots (I think) won that year. The Patriots for the first time (I think)...

Need I say more?

Except that the Yanks also lost that year... now 'nuff said fur shure,

d

16. Great post Yavin4!
Those that love the game should celebrate what a truely great series this was and what a great rivalry Boston/New York has had over the years. In spite of the lopsided WS results that NY has reaped, the BoSox and Yanks have always battled each other to a near draw.

I think you've put the right perspective on this.....

19. I'm not really a fan of either team, but
I was rooting for the Red Sox in this series.

I did appreciate what a great series this was and was glad that I was able to catch the games, although I had to get them on radio for 6 of the 7. But I can say that I witnessed one of the greatest LCS of all time.

For you Yankees fans, there always tomorrow and I don't think you guys are going to be hurting for winning teams any time soon.

21. nice post, Yavin4 . . . the Sox have my sincere congratulations . . .
and respect . . . they EARNED this victory by doing something never before accomplished by any team, anywhere . . . and they did it with guts, heart and class . . . this is a special team that deserves all the accolades they're getting tonight . . .

the Yankees, on the other hand, facilitated the most spectacular collapse in the history of the sport . . . they were three outs away from winning the series -- TWICE -- and couldn't close the deal . . . shame on them . . .

as for the World Series . . . Go Sox! . . . I'm with you all the way . . . :)

29. the funny part is...

in the following snip from your post Yavin4 (why Yavin4 if you don't mind my asking?), we could all replace "Yankees" with "Red Sox" and "lose" for "win" and vice versa and it's EXACTLY what alot of THE RED SOX FANS say all the time - me included:

"As for us, well there is a burden to being a Yankees fan. People will and do hate us. Why? Because we're the most successful sports franchise in history, and everyone guns for us. Sooner or later, someone is going to break through and beat us like the Red Sox did. Thus, this is the problem of being a fan for the greatest team in sports history. We had fun mocking the rivalries didn't we Y? Bernie (my fave from the Yankees) hit two homers. He will ALWAYS be my fave Yankee,

Boston never gave up, especially in Games 1 and 2, so I knew Boston wouldn't just roll over,,,they deserved the win.
The Yankees? I hate saying this, but it's been a nice run. Not enough good pitching, too much focus on hitting and big names. And that Yankes farm system...just like the budget surplus, it's long gone :-(
