Christian Bale is the new Batman! And other superhero stuff!

Christian Bale has been cast in the starring role of Bruce Wayne in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming Batman movie, to be directed by Christopher Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of production for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Principal photography on the film is expected to begin in early 2004. The movie is written by David Goyer and Nolan, and will follow the early career of The Dark Knight.

Said Nolan, "What I see in Christian is the ultimate embodiment of Bruce Wayne. He has exactly the balance of darkness and light that we were looking for."

Speaking of Smallville, does Clark nail it in the season premier?

1. WOO HOO!! Chris "Memento" Nolan!!!
Finally a director that CAN direct!!
Now, only if the producers give Nolan the freedom to resurrect the franchise and take it back to it’s more gritty roots as opposed to the neon-Vegas look.

7. Darren Aronofsky WAS supposed to direct, originally...

rather see him do the film than Nolan. It'd definitely be darker.

10. Aronofsy?!
Definitley darker...like I am still in therapy for Requiem For A Dream! A good movie, but one darkest movies I've ever layed eyes on. I Thought PI was better.

11. Ugh, Requiem For A Dream

It was an afterschool special with really good cinematography. Ok Darren, we get it! Drugs are bad!

Anyway, this is good news. Too bad Keanu is playing John Constantine in the Hellblazer movie. What a fucking crock.

12. Yeah.
Pi's one of my all-time favourite movies...and Requiem For A Dream gets my vote as the most depressing film I've ever seen.

13. American Psycho was hilarious.
And Bale is one of only a few Brits that can do a decent American accent. Branagh is another.

(I'm excluding southern accents, which are relatively easy for Brits, as they are very similar to English public school accents in many ways.)

16. Ugh what a crappy movie
A shining example of the worst in movie-making, take a great book and make a horrible, awful movie based on it!

3. Wow, that's pretty cool...
Christian Bale is a good actor, and has a good level of darkness for Batman. And I loved Memento, so I'm looking forward to Nolan's directing vision.

What is your bottom picture there? It's too dark to see.

6. Ah! Might be my monitor, not sure...
Well, then, to answer your question, I hope Clark nails LEX in the season premiere, since they actually have some sexual chemistry, unlike he and Blahna.

8. Too cool!
I now have great hopes for this Batman movie!

I've been impressed with Bale since Treasure Island. He was outstanding as Jim Hawkins. I haven't seen many of his movies, but he was again very impressive in American Psycho. And Memento was brilliant. This could be a great, great combination.

By the way, I found this information about Bale on the IMDB:

His father David married feminist icon Gloria Steinem on September 3, 2000.

A devoted animal lover, Christian has two dogs and three cats , which are all strays that he found.

Since reading "Charlotte's Web", Christian does not eat red meat.

Christian is active in many organizations, including Ark Trust, Greenpeace, the World Wildlife Foundation, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the Redwings Sanctuary, and the Happy Child Mission, and a school for streetkids in Rio De Janeiro.

His grandfather doubled for John Wayne in two movies, in Africa.

15. Empire of the Sun
I've been impressed with Bale's acting skills since Empire of the Sun. How many 12 year olds could carry a major movie like that, and not be overshadowed by having John Malkovich as his co-star?
