Sunday Halloween Irks Some in Bible Belt
NEWNAN, Ga. - Across the Bible Belt this Halloween, some little ghosts and goblins might get shooed away by the neighbors — and some youngsters will not be allowed to go trick-or-treating at all — because the holiday falls on a Sunday this year.

Some towns around the country are decreeing that Halloween be celebrated on Saturday to avoid complaints from those who might be offended by the sight of demons and witches ringing their doorbell on the Sabbath. Others insist the holiday should be celebrated on Oct. 31 no matter what.

It is an especially sensitive issue for authorities in the Bible Belt across the South.

"You just don't do it on Sunday," said Sandra Hulsey of Greenville, Ga. "That's Christ's day. You go to church on Sunday, you don't go out and celebrate the devil. That'll confuse a child."

more from yahoo...

When I was a kid, Halloween was all about wearing a scary costume, going trick-or-treating, and eating candy 'till your stomach hurt. My friends and I would never have mistaken Halloween for a "celebration of the devil." If we could tell the difference between church and Halloween 25 years ago, kids today certainly must be able to, as well.

2. So they've been doing this every seven years for decades?
Or did they just notice it and figure it was worth getting bent out of shape over?

3. I've lived in the south (Mississippi) my whole life...Halloween is always
observed on the Friday night when Halloween falls on Sunday, there was never any question. No one ever mentioned religion in connection with Halloween until the rise of fundamentalism in the mid-1980's. It was just a fun time to be a kid, wear costumes and eat candy. What a shame they've politicized and ruined it for the kids...

6. Yes, I remember the Fridays, it was more about getting
a good nights sleep before school on Monday in the places I lived.

4. Forced celebration of Halloween on Sat. urks sane others in Bible Belt
This crap pisses me off. The last time that this happened I went to all of the church parking lots in my area on Sun. night and took notes of the numbers of cars in each. Some whose members were yelling the loudest had their parking lots empty or with only 5 or so cars in them. I called in on talk radio and reported the results and made a point to tell people that I came in contact with just what I had discovered.

Let's just say that I know how to piss'em off.}(

8. Seriously............
these people are sick. If they're not feeling a serious sense of guilt over SOMETHING, all the time, they think they're being sinners. Heaven forbid they or their children should have..........dare I say it......a GOOD TIME! This grouchy, revenge driven father in the sky stuff is ridiculous. If there is a God, he/she/it must have a good sense of humor. George Bush is President, if that's not the most hilarious (and scarey at the same time) thing that's ever happened I don't know what is.

9. They can't just be Christian.
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 05:02 PM by nownow
They have to be positive Calvinists about it. Not only do they not want to have a good time, they want to make sure nobody else does, either.

Ben Franklin supposedly said beer proved God loves us and wants us to enjoy our lives. I'm a whole lot closer to Ben philosophically (I could do without the philandering and syphilis, I'm way too old to be doing that) than I am to Calvinists, that's for sure.

It's just another money making bunch of crap anyway. I know many of you like it for some reason, but it has no purpose.

12. It's fun to give candy to the trick-or-treating kids
and see all their different costumes (some are quite creative!), other than that, I don't really get into Halloween all that much as an adult.
