Nigeria is going to stone two more women to death
for adultry. The men were acquited for lack of evidence. One woman is pregnant and they will wait until her baby is born.

I gotta say that one thing I have gotten out of this whole big world mess is a lot better picture of how other women around the world are forced to live. Its an abomination in the whole Middle East. And in Africa and South America and just about everywhere else.

And if we don't watch it, Bush will try to make it so here, too.

I don't know what to do to help. But those women need SISTERS in a serious way.

1. What I want to know is . . .
how the hell you can convict a woman of adultery if the man she was accused of committing said act with isn't guilty? If she had no partner, she could not have committed adultery.

That is truly disgusting.

2. Amina Lawal was saved by the outpouring of caring. Lets save these two as
well. I'll see what we can do!

3. I think is Muslim Law
and they have the right to appeal. And they may win on appeal.

But they need help. But so do millions of other women.

Look at all of those poor women and children in Dafur. 90% of those people in the camps are women and children.

Afghan got to vote - if their husbands allowed them to sign up. But many of them are beaten - or even killed by their family members for things that have embarrassed the family - like getting attacked and raped.

There must be some way for women around the world to help. I think we are the only ones that can do it. I'm not sure that men really "get" it.

6. I agree with everything you wrote with the exception of the last
line. A great many men at DU, including the one to whom you responded with your post, have a great deal of compassion for the plight of these women. Their voices should not be discounted, IMHO.

13. And let's not forget a plea from a man is more likely to be considered
by those misogynistic fuckers.

21. Thanks - and as a man who "doesn't get it" I started a thread in LBN and I
have sent many e-mails to my representatives in Washington about this

So don't alienate those who are willing to help. Christ, it could be my fucking Sister or Mother!

We need women and men to raise their voices in protest of this kind of treatment of women.

Did you know that in Pakistan girls as young as 4 and 5 are being sold by their parents into prostitution because men there will pay big money to sleep with a child.

And in Africa babies - and I mean babies are being raped because it is a common myth that having sex with a virgin will cure AIDS. And they are raping babies (new borns) because there are no more virgins - most little girls have already been raped.

The plight of women around the world is frightening. And yet our President thinks Oil is more important.

My attempt at sarcasm regarding post #3. How can anyone think that men in this country would not be as indignant as women over this stoning?

5. Not to knock anyone's culture..
... but everywhere that radical Islamic law is in charge.. Women are just fodder... abused, raped, beaten and killed. That's just the way that particular sect of people treat their women. It's sad but true.

They may knock us by saying we objectify women and our women are not modest because of how they dress, but I'll take an empowered, self-determining woman over a women in a burqa being beaten with a rifle butt because her ankle is showing any day. It's sad that the world stands by and allows people to be treated that way.

Heyo

11. Women are treated horribly outside of sharia law too.
And many men suffer under sharia as well. The issue is when is the death penalty okay?

15. well there are things like female "circumcision" which I find
outrageous and in India the women who get acid thrown in their faces, burned alive, etc., because their dowry wasn't large enough. Yes womne are treated below animals in many parts of the world.

10. how do you boycott nigeria?
don't buy oil? don't talk to nigerian people?
The federal government won't interefere with sharia law because the people who support it will riot. To change this ruling, people will have to focus their attention on the specific individuals enforcing the law, and hope that the women win their appeals.

12. Boycott Shell Oil
You can't boycott all oil, but Shell, like in apartheid era South Africa, is the one that is behind most of the troubles in Nigeria. They've been involved in assassinating politicians, among other nefarious activities in Nigeria.

I haven't bought any Shell products in decades. I'll stick with BP, Mobil and Marathon. They are not perfect, of course, but they look good compared to Shell.

17. Anyone remember the film "Iron Jawed Angels"?
Yes, we can help them. We can show support, and show these women how we liberated ourselves. But then it's up to them.

Remember the film "Iron Jawed Angels"? Two women - two brave women named Alice Paul and Lucy Burns - risked everything to give women the vote. They were jailed for protesting, abused in jail, went on a hunger strike and had to endure being force-fed raw eggs, and were nearly labeled "insane" and locked in a psych hospital.

Freedom is never easy, and the best freedoms are earned, not given.

Women of the Middle East, Women of Africa - we can send you money, we can support your efforts, but the first brave steps must be taken by you.

Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 02:52 PM by huntsvilledem
ok? you shouldn't confuse them, true Muslims know this has nothing to do with Islam and any Muslim who practices such things is not practicing their religion. Some of you need to do some studying, this is what I would expect on the freeper forum.

^ (to all who are saying it is because of Islam)

But yeah, it is just awful to hear that. I really hope someone can help these poor women.
