jobs for engineers
I have been an electrical engineer for about 7.5 years, and have been working for companies that sub-contract to the military industrial complex the entire time. I have been increasingly less-satisfied with this style of work, and I would like to work somewhere where I can make a difference. But here is the catch. I still want to be a EE. It seems that there must be some company or non-profit out there who needs electrical engineers to work on projects that are socially redeeming. Environmental work comes to mind, but I see nothing online for Electrical Engineers in this particular field. If anyone knows of a site or a source I can look up, I would appreciate it. I will continue my search in the meantime.

1. Concidered Codes and Standards work?
There are some private and Not for Profit companies that work with standards and testing, e.g. Nationaly Recognized Testing Labs (NRTL) such as UL, ETL, etc.

2. I have worked for such a company
Law Engineering and Environmental Services, was headquartered in Atlanta. I worked in their Houston office for 9 years, from 1987 until 1996, as a geologist. They unfortunately were bought out by another company, so that name may not be around any more. You might Google "Engineering and Environmental Services" and see what comes up. They did primarily civil engineering type work, but would hire anyone with an engineering background and train them. They hired me to run their analytical microscopy laboratory because of my background in analytical mineralogy and polarized light microscopy. The job was fairly well-paid, and with good benefits. Good Luck!:bounce:

3. Go build a hydro-electric power station
Lots of EE's needed there.

They're big in South America. My best friend's father spent two years in Peru working on one.

5. Boy oh boy have I got an idea for you...... now follow me on this one
I understand where you are coming from, I took the Bell and Howell electric thingy som 30 years ago.. built the TV, Oscilloscope, Digital VOM, and the breadboard.... oh wait.. that doesn't apply... ok here goes.... now consider this:

We have an energy crisis.

We have peaked in oil production.... the end of suburbia website speaks on this and Michael Ruppert site www.copvcia.com expounds on it in great detail.

OK... here is where you might want to look, in fact I insist you look.
This is a list of Plugpowers partnerships to date....
Celanese
DTE Energy Technologies
Engelhard
General Electric
Honda R&D Co., Ltd. Of Japan
Vaillant GmbH

There are and have been fuel cell companies looking for distributors for their home cogen units some producing upwards of 8Kwatts. One I know of for certain is being fronted by GE. You can check out the home unit that is roughly the size of a dishwasher and sits outside the house on a pad at GE's site.

GE HomeGen 7000 Residential Fuel Cell to be Sold by NJ Resources

>>On Sunday, Slashdot broke a story about the announcement of the General Electric HomeGen 7000 Residential Fuel Cell Power System. This is the first fuel cell system that we are aware of that is designed to be installed in residential and small business applications.<<

You also have Ballard Power in Canada, however I don't know if they have a unit ready for prime time as of yet.

www.ballardpower.com

You also Have Fuel Cell Energy in Danbury Conn. that prolly will have a home unit soon... they are providing megawatt systems around the world for distributed power generation as well as major power plants...
www.fuelcellenergy.com

Then last but not least, getting to the solar answer... you should goto www.homepower.com mouse over the Magazine Icon... and in the dropdown menu select files and downloads... then click on Guerrilla Solar and see what those people are up to.....

many of the profiles are EXTREMELY interesting.

Reasons why I post this. One. We have an energy crisis facing the country.

Two. These technologies are up and coming and you might find them interesting, perhaps profitable, and certainly environmentally sound.

Three. You would be helping end the dependence on M.E. oil.

Four. If you incorporate some of this technology into your own home, you will save money.... and that is a good thing.

Five. I wish I had the experience and knowledge to do this or to get involved with it... but alas I do not... so maybe I can live the experience vicariously through someone else whom I turn on to it....

Six. You don't know where some of the contacts you might make might lead you.....
