Help! Recently "converted" friend wants to copy Moore's DVD and
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 02:49 PM by KoKo01
send to his freeper relatives. He loved Moore's movie and thinks he can convert the rest of his family. Can he copy the DVD? Or, is it better to
download it from Moore's site?

Have any of you had success copying the DVD, though?

thanks!

2. It's not too difficult, but you need a DVD writer and software
I don't think Mr. Moore would be upset. But the Lion's Gate folks might not think too highly of it.

You would need to download it from a "P2P" network, like KaZaA, Gnutella or a BitTorrent "seed". Then you need to convert it from what will probably be an AVI/XVID file into a regular old DVD.

It sounds tough. It isn't. But it will take a few hours of educating yourself to do it.

Good luck!

4. Do you mean he can get the software free from "P2P" networks and then
convert it to an AVI/XVID file? It's free stuff? (I ask because I'm clueless, but he's pretty techie but may not have the right software.)

13. Movie Coding
Actually, the movie on the DVD is encoded as MPEG-2. It's about 4 GB for 2 hours of movie. The MPEG-2 can be re-compressed with DIVX, XVID, or some other superior compression system. That 4 GB movie usually can be recoded as a 700 MB DIVX/XVID file.

There are also formats that let you put a movie on two CD-Rs -- the format is VCD/SVCD. It's not quite as good as the others, but it's still far better than VHS quality.

You download the P2P client -- Bearshare (the free version) is a good one -- and type the name of the movie (or album, or whatever) into the search box. After a few minutes, there may be two or two hundred files, so select the most likely ones and download them.

Then, when they're on the hard disk, you could make DVDs with a DVD writer, or those two-CD SVCD-coded movies.

It's free of charge, but it's probably illegal to download movies. The MPAA wants it to be illegal, and have spent a lot of money to get laws they want written, so a little soul-searching is in order before doing it.

As for the "right" software, I think Nero now has a DVD copying program bunded with their other stuff. Check around.

5. He could make VHS copies
If he has a dual DVD/VCR it's easier. If he has seperate gizmos it's just a matter of hooking up the right wires in the back.

Assuming he has a DVD burner on his computer, I suppose he could download the whole DVD to his hard drive and then burn copies. This is of course copyright infringement and it would be nice if he'd spend the bucks to BUY the DVD's for his friends and relatives and tell them to pass them around.

He can't download it from Moore's website, although I'm sure there are places on the web that he can.

Alternatively, if his relatives are local, he could invite them all for dinner and then they could have a viewing party!

7. BTW. ...he's in FLA and relatives are in Georgia and he's a struggling
airline pilot for one of the cheap airlines..and in danger of being layed off...

I agree about buying the copies and I don't approve of copyright infringement either...but I thought Moore gave permission?

Your post was funny though. Imagining his relatives all coming over to watch Moore's film....You wouldn't believe his relatives....OMG...it would be a nightmare. :D

9. That's true ....
but I know that it was available on the internet like the day after it was in the theaters. He said he really didn't care as long as you didn't sell it. I wouldn't tell everyone to do it though. Spend the $20! IT'S FOR THE SAKE OF AMERICA!

However, he may want to consider his relationship with his family before he sends them F 9/11. Georgia isn't exactly a swing state. I haven't seen a poll with Bush having less than 53%.

11. if he took the money from Lion's Gate
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 03:48 PM by northzax
and you know he did, then he cannot tell people to steal it. Mel Gibson can tell you to steal the Passion, since he paid for the distribution himself. Moore stood to make little money from each copy sold, he'd already made his, so there was little for him to sacrafice.

can a builder tell someone to steal a house that they have already sold? Moore sold his intellectual property ot someone else. noone forced him to do it, he's a savvy guy, he hardly got taken advantage of.

12. Please read my post...with link that says Lion's Gate approved! I'm
feeling like a low down "thief" for posting here. I honestly remembered Moore saying everything was okay to bootleg or whatever. My friend asked me to send info...

I don't need the guilt...waaaaaaaaaaa!

10. Moore and Lions Gate said okay to download and copying. Link & Snip:
(I thought I'd better Google this to make sure my memory was correct, and this article seems to say both Moore and Lion's Gate said okay. My friend did ask me btw if it was okay...not wanting you guys to think I'm asking you to give me information that's illegal)

Moore: pirate my film, no problem

Fury as Fahrenheit 9/11 director backs illegal not-for-profit downloads
By Iain S Bruce, Online Editor

Controversial film-maker Michael Moore has welcomed the appearance on the internet of pirated copies of his anti-Bush documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 and claimed he is happy for anybody to download it free of charge.

The activist, author and director told the Sunday Herald that, as long as pirated copies of his film were not being sold, he had no problem with it being downloaded.

“I don’t agree with the copyright laws and I don’t have a problem with people downloading the movie and sharing it with people as long as they’re not trying to make a profit off my labour. I would oppose that,” he said.

“I do well enough already and I made this film because I want the world, to change. The more people who see it the better, so I’m happy this is happening.”

Moore’s views have not been well received by Hollywood’s establishment, which is fighting a war against the online pirates it claims cost the industry £1.6 billion a year in lost sales.

Despite up to 150 people simultaneously bagging free copies of its most valuable property at any given time 24 hours a day, Lions Gate says it has no plans to oppose the practice. While unwilling to make any official statement likely to further provoke Hollywood’s heavy hitters, the film company appears to have fallen into line with its director’s laissez-faire approach.

Moore said: “Is it wrong for someone who’s bought a film on DVD to let a friend watch it for free? Of course it’s not. It never has been and never will be. I think information, art and ideas should be shared.”

Defenders of Moore’s position include Pulp Fiction director Quentin Tarantino, who earlier this year encouraged audiences in countries where his films are not legally available to obtain counterfeit copies.

14. I've burned a few copies
and given them out to people, with instructions to make anyone who comes to visit watch the movie. I didn't charge anything for them, though.
