Post your vote for the Alternative National Anthem Here.
I vote for John Mellancamp's "Pink Houses," especially after watching his amazing band's performance of the song during tonight's "Vote For Change Tour" finale.

Your choice?

2. The Power and The Glory
By Phil Ochs

Come and take a walk with me thru this green and growing land
Walk thru the meadows and the mountains and the sand
Walk thru the valleys and the rivers and the plains
Walk thru the sun and walk thru the rain

Here is a land full of power and glory
Beauty that words cannot recall
Oh her power shall rest on the strength of her freedom
Her glory shall rest on us all (on us all)

From Colorado, Kansas, and the Carolinas too
Virginia and Alaska, from the old to the new
Texas and Ohio and the California shore
Tell me, who could ask for more?

Yet she's only as rich as the poorest of her poor
Only as free as the padlocked prison door
Only as strong as our love for this land
Only as tall as we stand

But our land is still troubled by men who have to hate
They twist away our freedom & they twist away our fate
Fear is their weapon and treason is their cry
We can stop them if we try

21. Absolutely; it's moving even when not done by Ray Charles.
When Ray sings it--it is a fabulous metaphor for the promise of America.

Except it makes me cry like a baby!

6. Die Fahne Hoch!
Die Fahne Hoch die Reihen fest geschlossen
S. A. marschiert mit ruhig festem Schritt

Bald flattern Hitler-fahnen Uber allen Strassen
Die Knechtschaft dauert nur mehr kurze Zeit

Die Fahne hoch die Reihen fest geschlossen
S. A. marschiert mit ruhig festem Schritt
Kam'raden die Rotfront und Reaktion erschossen
Marschier'n im Geist in unsern Reihen mit

Or at least... thats what it might be if we get 4 more years.

That anthem is already taken. Besides, von Fallersleben would be rotating in his grave once more- he was a radical supporter of the German Democratic movement and a freethinker.

The song, which wasn't adopted as the German Anthem until 1922, had the line "Deutschland über alles" as a battlecry against the German confederation. It was not originally intended to have an expansionist sound; it was later abused by both, the Nazis and Allied propagandists to convey that meaning.

10. Currently? Wargasm by L7
"Wargasm Wargasm, one two three
Tie a yellow ribbon 'round the amputee
Masturbate, watch it on TV
Crocodile tears for the refugee

Wargasm Wargasm, one two three
smutty bloody pictures, ecstasy
Blue balls waiting impatiently
From Alcatraz to Lady Liberty.

Body bags and dropping bombs,
The pentagon knows how to turn us on.
Wargasm Wargasm, one two three
People, people, ecstasy
wave those flags high in the air
As long as it takes place over there.

Wargasm
Wargasm
Wargasm
Wargasm

Body bags and dropping bombs,
the pentagon knows how to turn us, turn us on
Wargasm
Turn us on
Wargasm"

23. if bush gets elected:

Dogs of war and men of hate
With no cause, we don't discriminate
Discovery is to be disowned
Our currency is flesh and bone
Hell opened up and put on sale
Gather 'round and haggle
For hard cash, we will lie and deceive
Even our masters don't know the web we weave
One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world
Invisible transfers, long distance calls,
Hollow laughter in marble halls
Steps have been taken, a silent uproar
Has unleashed the dogs of war
You can't stop what has begun
Signed, sealed, they deliver oblivion
We all have a dark side, to say the least
And dealing in death is the nature of the beast
One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world
The dogs of war don't negotiate
The dogs of war won't capitulate,
They will take and you will give,
And you must die so that they may live
You can knock at any door,
But wherever you go, you know they've been there before
Well winners can lose and things can get strained
But whatever you change, you know the dogs remain.
One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world

24. Which Way To America?
Living Colour.

or... "Hungry Freaks, Daddy" - The MOI

or... "American Tune" - Paul Simon

Much as I worship Woody Guthrie, I think his son said it best (about 'This Land Is Your Land' being proposed as a national anthem):

"That would make it official, and my father felt once you make something official, that kills it."

That is a rough paraphrase, but you all get the gist.
