1. Let me guess, the person that wrote that has a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker?

3. I hate to say it, but of course I will, it reminds me of
my former, civil engineer boyfriend's spelling.

I spent a couple of years proofing and editing his letters and other writings for work. He is a very intelligent and talented man, but spelling just escaped him.

4. not to defend their spelling
but I would guess that English is their second language. I have a Serbian friend who repeatedly mixes up words that have the same sound... looks just like something she would write.........

7. Mr. Pcat spells this way... he's mildly dyslexic.
He reads very well, speaks well most of the time, is a brilliant programmer... but he can't spell to save his life. He depends on spellcheck.

When he was learning to read, the fashion was for phonics. His brain works on the word recognition system. Bad mismatch.

While it would be nice if everyone could spell, until we get a more individualized education system, it's not going to happen.

(As it happens, Mr. Pcat's mom is a special education teacher... now. She went into special ed after all of the problems she had teaching him to read. Unfortunately, he didn't get the benefit of her later education and basically worked out means to work around his disability.)

10. If you think that's bad, check out
the supposedly great Geoffrey Chaucer author I just came across. His spelling is atrocious:

Whilom, as olde stories tellen us,
Ther was a duc that highte theseus;
Of atthenes he was lord and governour,
And in his tyme swich a conquerour,
That gretter was ther noon under the sonne.
Ful many a riche contree hadde he wonne;
What with his wysdom and his chivalrie,
He conquered al the regne of femenye,
That whilom was ycleped scithia,
And weddede the queene ypolita,
And broghte hire hoom with hym in his contree
With muchel glorie and greet solempnytee,
And eek hir yonge suster emelye.
And thus with victorie and with melodye
Lete I this noble duc to atthenes ryde,
And al his hoost in armes hym bisyde.
And certes, if it nere to long to heere,
I wolde have toold yow fully the manere
How wonnen was the regne of femenye
By theseus and by his chivalrye;
And of the grete bataille for the nones
Bitwixen atthenes and amazones;

Don't quit your day job, buddy.

11. Chaucer.'s...
native language was French. He wrote The Canterbury Tales when Saxon German was just coming into its own as the basis of what we now call "English". Give him a break! Also, because printing was so laborious and expensive, copists would often abbreviate words to save time.
