Keep my poor mom in your thoughts or prayers
She's a good liberal who's voting for Kerry and lurks here, but has never posted. She's about to pass a kidney stone the size of a pencil eraser and going through various other related medical horrors. I've heard that hurts a lot.

9. Thanks
 Not surgery; I had a procedure called scaling and root planing. The procedure itself wasn't too bad (love the nitrous oxide!). It was like having a very vigorous regular cleaning, but I'm not recovering very well. I tried to call the dentist back today, but they're out on vacation.

12. after having my first little
kidney stone (ha! felt like a kidney boulder) at 20...and a few more since... tell your mom that my thoughts and prayers are with her. if she can get it crushed--all the better (i was never that lucky!), but if she HAS to pass it because it's too late--tell her to DEMAND morphine. That's the only way I handled it.

26. that's what they told me too..
it was too small for it.... it may be too small in their estimation..but they're not the ones passing it....

the best thing that i can say is ... tell her to remember lamaze sort of breathing..it helps..they made me do it (although i did throw things at them at first when they were trying to make me calm down...damn, it hurt and they were trying to get me to focus... "all i could think was focus, my ass! get this thing outta me!"finally someone said morphine drip...and 10 minutes later... the pain was *cloaked*....

if she knows the type of stone that it is...sometimes it helps to drink some lemon water (that is if the stone has spines on it..but stones can vary...some uric acid..some calicum...etc...

What are kidney stones? What causes them? Where do they pass through? How can you prevent kidney stones?

19. They're not terribly common, thankfully
I think it's something like 1 in 1000 will ever suffer from one. My doctor told my mother they're more common in the south because of the heat and dehydration. So, drink lots of water. I don't know a whole lot about them other than it's caused by calcification in the kidneys that crystallizes and forms into little stones and work their way through your urinary tract. :shudder: If they're big enough they can zap you with sound waves to pulverize them, or if they're too big they remove them via surgery. If not, nature takes its course and it is supposed to be excruciating.

29. answers
what are kidney stones? well, it depends..some are formed out of uric acid..some by calcium...etc...but it's not a "common" occurance... not everyone gets them...

where do they pass thru: well, in my case... from the kindey (which begins feeling like a throbbing pain in your back... when i first had one...i thought i had pulled a muscle or something...it was just an odd pain in my back)..but then the pain moved to the side...because it was going from the kidney thru the uretur tube. In my case it hurt like hell from the time it moved out of the kidney through the tube.... then it goes to your bladder..and out the "exit"...as in..you take a whizz and it's out.... now...most would think it hurts when it's going out the 'penis' ....nah..that's the easy part...it's the contractions from the tube which push the stone that makes it hurt.

mind you..i am not a urologist..so i am giving you just an idea of how it travels from point a..to point b..to point c...

how can you prevent them... well you have to know which sort you have after passing them.. they send them off..hve them tested..then they tell you to modify your diet....

Labor... She lived through having you (I assume)She will live through this as well. Tell her to ask the Nice Doctor for some Either Dilaudid or Ultram, It should ease it some.. Many people say that Morphine doesn't touch it at all. I wish her a Speedy Recovery

33. LOL I kicked the Midwife in the chest and
BROKE the Bed Rail..... then I asked her if she got her Nursing degree working on Humans or if she got it in Vet School. She told met to calm down, I told her to Fuck off. My Mom, who decided that I needed her (Umm I Moved out when I was 16 for a Reason, Mom...) stood there and kept saying "I died when I had you.." (which she really did, They had to do CPR on her...) I looked her dead in the face and asked her if she wanted a cookie. I was terrible!

oh, do i understand that...

i kinda edited my post a bit..but since you were willing to share...

my mom drove me to the hospital and she wound up pulling into the wrong lot... i slapped her in the back of the head and cursed at her like a sailor... i was vomiting like crazy...i demanded a bucket and they handed me one of those stupid kidney shaped dishes.... i threw it across the room at the nurses and called them all sorts of names....they tried to hold me down to put an iv in the first time and someone stuck the needle...yes, stuck the needle..the BLOODY needle in the mattress...don't ask me why and like you..i asked what vet clinic i was in because it was a bio hazard to be sure! then..beside me in the emergency room... this poor little kid was brought in with a severe cold, i believe, and he was crying and coughing terribly...i ripped open the curtin from around my 'area' and told his mother to take his coughing and snotty ass away from me because it was making me sick.... she started to fire back a response and i didnt let her get a word in...i cut loose a slew of word combinations that caused my mom and aunt to go hide in the waiting are away from me.... then the nurses come back in with a penlight.... when they tried to get me to focus..they used a little penlight and tried to get me to look at it.... HA! that got slapped out of someone's hand.... finally some brave doctor put me on super morphine drip..not the kind you punch but the kind where they make sure you're really doped up.... so here i am... terrorizing the entire emergency room staff..cursing....10 minutes later...the pop in to check up on me and i was as happy as a lark just humming along to the music and telling jokes... but the funny part about it was... i was such a demon about the entire thing that when they came to check up on me...i saw a few heads peer through the curtains and i was like...'come on in...the party's just started.... sit down and chat...

32. Epidural all the way
For some reason mine wear off after awhile. With my first I was in a small, ritzy, brand new hospital and I was practically the only one there having a baby, so I got instant, immediate attention and they came right in and turned it up every time, so I never felt a thing. I had my second at a huge, busy hospital that ran its delivery like an assembly line, and once they were done with the epidural that was it. So, yes, it really hurts, but I can't compare it to a kidney stone as I've never had one. Truthfully, a kidney stone sounds a lot worse to me.

I hope everything turns out Ok after this rough spot.

Maybe this (slightly) funny story might help, tell your mom if you think a laugh might help.

A guy my dad worked with for a while.. had kidney stones. He couldn't pass them, so was having to go in for surgery for them, which absolutely terrified him. The night before he was supposed to go in for surgery he was a bundle of nerves, understandably.. so he drank a six pack of beer..(probably against medical advice) ...and passed the stones that night. B-)

Heyo
