And the Y2Kers are the descendants of a loose-knit survivalist movement that's been around for a long time. In the 1950s they built bomb shelters in their backyards. In the 1960s they armed themselves. In the 1970s they bought farms and retreated to rural areas and built up their weapons arsenal. Etc.

They overlap somewhat with the Rapture and End Times folks, who overlap some with the Nostradamus types who see end-times prophecies everywhere.

Freedom of expression and belief is an essential safety valve for nervous people. As long as people are allowed to express their beliefs they tend to stay relatively content. It's when speech is suppressed that it becomes dangerous, like a boiler with a clogged release valve. All that steam builds up and then wham you get a revolution.
