Hey if you didn't notice...I'M BACK
I switched browsers from IE to Firefox tonight and everything's going smoothly! I have a ton of work from high school, and I think I'm failing Latin cause I can't memorize anything. But, I've been volunteering in my local Kerry/Edwards office and doing plenty of marching band - so things can be said as ok. Oooh...also doing an essay on Kerry...or rather an essay on the Boston Globe book about Kerry which is still basically like an essay about Kerry...if it turns out to be ok I'll maybe post it.

1. You're studying Latin?
And you're in high school and can't remember anything? I'm sorry for you, but you've made me feel somewhat better about my own inability to memorize Latin (which I only just started to study a couple of years ago; I set it aside after a month and only just began studying it again intensively a couple of weeks ago). I'm 45 and I can't say two sentences in the language.

Are you motivated to study Latin, or are you being forced to study it against your will?

2. I chose to
It's just I'm bad at memorizing. I've never been good at trying to learn foreign languages, probably cause I'm not even good at English grammar (well, the technical stuff).

The only sentences I remember from translating are "Puellae sunt bonae" (Girls are good); "Insula est magna" (The island is large)... very basic ones like that.

3. Tip for latin: Sing it.
I memorized my declensions to Old MacDonald's Farm. It helped a lot. (You could update it and use American Idiot's tune...)

Of course, when I was singing under my breath in class while taking the test.....

The other thing that helped was a list of kind of silly phrases I found that had a lot of the declensions and tenses in easy to remember formats. http://www.zippynet.com/pages/latin.htm I also had a copy of Alicia in Terra Mirabili which is now online. http://www.gmu.edu/departments/fld/CLASSICS/alice.html

And here's Jabberwocky in Latin.... it might help. http://www.ruthannzaroff.com/wonderland/jabberwocky.htm

And AFF, your grades are essential at this stage in your life. I never thought I'd say this, but if it comes to a choice between volunteer work and getting through school, school is the priority. School is your job. Don't get "fired".

Ex mea sententia,
Pcat

6. Quid id est?? I feel ya on the Latin stuff....
I got my first flag ever in school thanks to that dead language. All that mythology and Roman history I learned didn't help me one bit when I ended up with a teacher who was *all grammer*!!! Ugh!!

'Luck!

9. Welcome back!
This week, my US History class and my Government & Politics class seem to be studying the same thing, so I have 3 periods in a row of the constitution. Interesting subject, but not for 2 hours straight every morning.
