I think that the Freedom Party storyline with Jake Featherston, apart from the other storylines in "Victorious Opposition," is reminiscent of what's happening in our country now. In the novel, the Freedom Party storyline starts with Jake Featherston, who now has become the President of the Confederate States of America, and he uses his own political party to game the elections and to disenfranchise voters from voting for other parties such as the Whigs.
The Freedom Party gains greater power, and it's now an one-party government in the Confederate States, and Jake Featherston is very dangerous, doesn't care about flouting the laws, and loves taking the Confederate states to war against the United States of America. They also control the press, and use it to spout propaganda against blacks, and other political parties---sounds familiar, eh? It's basically a fascist pseudo-democracy in the Confederate States.
The parallels in "Victorious Opposition" from the Freedom Party storyline is so similar to what's going on today. Did anyone else see that in the novel?
