6. Jinn.
They can see them as whispy things. Cats don't really know what they are either, so they bat at them and chase them in and out of doors as they pass around and through. They are pretty much harmless but try to be sure you are not angry or agitated when they are around as they can be feeding off of that and cause problems.

Don't ask how I know any of this.

Build up over time of reading into countless metaphysical systems coupled with experiential explorations over multiple mediums including word, act, thought, mind, and time. "Jinn" just happens to be the best word I have come across for them. Most other words assume they are the animé of once living creatures or demonic and wicked in nature and neither is truly accurate.

7. if you stand in a window just at dusk or dawn and look at the light
beams going through the air - you will see them too

it is like sparkly specks in the air

you feel like you have crossed into the spirit world
it is really neat

Donna Williams talks about it in her book - Nobody Nowhere or her other one Somebody Somewhere

it is really neat when you see it

9. Cats travel through different dimensions
This would explain not only the chasing of "invisible" objects, but also:

- Why they sit and stare right through you when you invite them to sit on your lap and be petted.

- Why you can repeatedly search the house for them without success until you are certain that they got out somehow, and then find them a half hour later in a spot you checked no less than five times.

- Why they will eschew a perfectly pristine litterbox and use the corner of a rug or a pile of clean laundry.

The only thing known to pierce multiple dimensions is the sound of a can opener. I have felt long-deceased cats brush against my legs when I opened a can of food.

25. they do appear and disappear
I never have found the place my cat hides. We had everybody out looking the one time and all came back upset. Next thing we know, he comes walking up to us in the bedroom and says What??

11. Mine does Bug Patrol
My lard butt cat does bug patrol where she scans the walls for flies, moths or other flying insects. If she thinks she sees one and it could be a damn cobweb or shadow on the wall, she races around meowing. Maybe your cats are seeing imaginary insects like mine does?

12. It's stuff from the next dimension over
Cats routinely go there. It's how they walk through walls.

I lost a cat last year because one of the other cats taught her how to walk through walls and she never made it back. I could hear her meowing behind the tub.

16. I wonder if it's the same thing one of my birds stares at.
The bird will stare intently at something, sometimes frightened, sometimes not. When you look to see what he is staring at, there's nothing there--and he is still staring.

27. I don't think it is metaphysical.
Cats are different. Just my opinion. Their mission is ... I don't know.

Mine hisses at me when I get out of the shower before I start to have the familiar stink. She hisses at the clean clothes because they no longer have the familiar stink. But when she stands at attention to a dark window in my home, my hair stands up right with hers. When her ears cock to a noise I can't hear, I turn my head too.

Her senses are more refined than mine.

She can't type. That's good.

31. Why, the Sprites, of course.
One gets kitty to chase it and the others hang on to the tail while kitty runs. It's a fun game. Then, they go and play hide and seek in the laundry basket. All of this is followed by nap time and then repeated through out the day and night.

32. I think they're responding to sounds in pipes or vents
I think there are high pitch noises that echo through pipes that we can't here but that drive the cat's nuts. This theory also explains synchronization in kitty craziness as well as the fascination with bathtubs and sinks despite the hatred of water.
