The ultimate bubba: BUBBALYMPICS 2003

ubba-Lympics 2003 is a smorgasbord of contests to name the ultimate bubba.

On Saturday, 10 contestants from Alachua and Marion counties will gather at Wild Waters to compete in hot dog-eating, frozen-T-shirt, bathing suit, SPAM-sculpting, inner tube, belly-flop and duck-hunt contests. The bubbas will compete for prizes such as a Bahamas cruise and an estimated $1,500 fishing package.

The contest kicks off at the Ocala-area water park at 11 a.m. Saturday, but many contestants are already having fun. Some gathered recently at the park for a newspaper photo shoot, all sporting their best bubba gear.

Ocala's Randy Shippee, who goes by the name "knotthead," showed up with a blue T-shirt cut around the bottom in triangles. A rope dangled around his knee-length jeans.

"When you guys see me next week," he told his fellow competitors, "you'll say, 'Uh-oh. I can't say nothing more.'"

Dan Murkerson of Gainesville, who found out about the contest while eating his habitual breakfast at Krystal, showed up for the photo shoot in blue board shorts decorated with yellow, swerving lines and "my regular ol' everyday shirt."

All potential Bubba-Lympics competitors were given three minutes to shove down as many burgers as they could at the Krystal Burger franchise. Contest co-sponsor WOGK-FM, K-Country, reported the winning wolf-down was 11.
