In honor of B.B. Kings birthday, I have a question for Blues fans.
I want to expand my blues collection.
What is the one CD I must have?

5. Why would you get a Freddie King album without "Hideaway" and "San-Ho-Zay"
?

Just my humble opinion, of course. The correct answer is to buy every Freddie King album you can find. :)

10. "Goin' Down"...the stuff "Desert Island Discs" are made of
There's a split-second in one of the solos...and the solos on this track sting and cut DEEP...where Freddie just yells "WOAH!" to punctuate a note that he hits. "Goin' Down" is one of those songs where blues crossed the line over into rock and roll, and it kicked rock and roll's ASS. It kicked it HARD, I tells ya.

:-)

Greatness is made up of moments...the more MOMENTS you have under your belt, the greater you are...like BB King's solo on "Confessin' The Blues," even though THIS album is more famous for "The Thrill Is Gone"...one of my "mix CDs" for the car has "Confessin' The Blues" and "Goin' Down" back-to-back...

...and don't even get me started on Buddy Guy.

:toast:

2. The Complete Robert Johnson
Even though it's not complete (another take of one song has been found), it's terrific.

I like Document Records "Son House 1928-1930" which has all of House's 1930 songs and lots of other similar singers.

And "Muddy Waters Greatest Hits" is terrific.

3. The Very Best of John Lee Hooker
But in honor of BB King I would also suggest Live at the Regal. Great version of "The Thrill is Gone".

14. Yeah, my bad, but I still stand by Regal for
Sweet Little Angel and Every Day I Have the Blues. But the Thrill is Gone is the classic. Had the wrong disk. Sorry about that. I get easily confused.

15. Both are essential, "Regal" considered one of the best live albums EVER.
From Amazon:

Heralded as one of the greatest live blues albums ever recorded, this set catches the singer-guitarist as his star was in ascent: in 1964 playing Chicago's answer to Harlem's Apollo Theater--the Regal. King's performance is visceral. He sings so hard that gravel flies even in his clearest high notes. And his trademark single-note guitar lines are sharp and steely, matching his voice with trembling vigor. He offers early hits like "How Blue Can You Get," "Worry, Worry," and "You Upset Me Baby" to what's essentially his adopted hometown crowd (by his own account, King had already played the theater hundreds of times). They give him a hero's welcome. In fact, the audience's screaming enthusiasm is distracting. But rarely has a love-fest of this magnitude between a performer and fans been documented. --Ted Drozdowski

16. Cook County Jail is so hot.
I love during the intro when they introduce the warden and all you hear is "BOOOOOOOO!!!!" And then the band...

7. Bukka White
No doubt it would be BB's cousin, Bukka White, on his dobro. I've had his Greatest Hits album for nearly ten years and it is as fresh today as the first time I heard it. If I had to be on a desert island, this would be the one album I would take.

13. Blind Willie McTell
The 1927-1933 Sessions.

Also get some Charley Patton, from that same era.

For electric blues, Howlin' Wolf - "The Chess Box", or Muddy Waters - if not "The Chess Box" he did, then "Hard Again".

For something contemporary, Robert Cray - "Midnight Stroll".

I have plenty to recommend. :-)

20. This might be an odd selection but it's great
Ali Farka Toure, Niafunke. Ry Cooder has recorded with him. I first heard of him on NPR. They told a story of him returning to his home in Mali early in the morning (3am, I think) and blasting John Lee Hooker from his car stereo so everyone would know he was home.

Excellent musician, interesting blend of African music and instruments with electric blues. It's different but definitely blues.

Also, James Blood Ulmer, Black Rock. Great electric blues album but hard to find.
