but the intent was to make faster storage, not really more reliable.
Processing power in was following Moore's Law, but disk speed was
only increasing at a linear rate. Supercomputers needed to be
"fed", getting data to and from memory was becoming the serious
bottleneck (still is) in solving even "compute bound" problems.
RAID had been around for years and years, with early example of
striped disk arrays going back to the middle sixties. (Look at
IBM's early work in sync spindle disk arrays for example). All
that Garth and the Berkeley team did was create a taxonomy of
RAID implementations, plus do a lot of work in defining the
system reliability of such disk arrays. Of course, RAID 5 WAS a
new concept. RAID was really Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks,
not whatever they morphed it into now (Independent!).

Oh well. Long ago... far far away (1988).

Oh, about the other Raid... try this instead:

Dehydrate Them

You can sprinkle diatomaceous earth around and in the ant beds. You
can get it at swimming pool places and it is harmless to humans and
pets. It dehydrates and kills the ants.

8. really!
Can you sprinkle that stuff around where they would come in? Would that work? 'Cause I don't know where their ant hill is...

9. I think corn starch coated with sugar would also
do the trick, place it on ant trails, they will find it and
take it back to the ant colony. But I only remember that as
a story, never tried it. The pool filter material (diatomaceous
earth) is only really useful around the colony (I think).
