Attention, True 80s Music Geeks!
Submit a list of songs that you feel are essential, but underappreciated, from the 80s. I feel that the 80s get short shrift musically. I also like to get turned on to stuff that I might have missed. (This is not a "Desert Island Discs" list, so don't try to complile the end-all, be-all list. These are "Hey, Did You Ever Hear This?" songs. Also, late-70's songs can be slipped in if they influenced you in the 80s.)

Here's some of mine:

"We Live As We Dream, Alone" - Gang Of Four
"Annalisa" - Public Image Limited
"Down In The Park" - Tubeway Army (Gary Numan)
"Non-Alignment Pact" - Pere Ubu
"Que Pasa/Me No Pop I" - Coati Mundi
"Cicely" - Cocteau Twins
"Mercy Seat" - Ultra Vivid Scene
"Automan" - The Young Canadians
"I Am The Law" - Human League
"Cavern" - Liquid Liquid (the inspiration for "White Lines")
"Contort Yourself" - James White & The Blacks
"Dad I'm In Jail" - Was (Not Was)
"Birth School Work Death" - The Godfathers
"All In Red" - It Bites (cheesy as all hell, but I still like it)
"In A Lifetime" - Clannad & Bono

......... GO!

Tell Me That I'm Dreaming

I was going to say Making Plans for Nigel by XTC, but I realized that's from 1979. So I'll say anything off of Black Sea.

9. It's in the order of their hedgerow-oh-ohs...
"Ease" by Public Image Limited. PiL purists say the band sucked after Second Edition/Metal Box, but the Bill Laswell produced "Album" is one of the few LPs I have yet to get even slightly tired of.

"Enter the Exterminator" - Scraping Foetus off the Wheel

"Dig It" - Skinny Puppy

"Over the Shoulder" - Ministry

"Temple of Love" - Sisters of Mercy

"We Stood Still" - Ultravox

"Hip Hop, Bee Bop (Don't Stop)" - Mann Parrish

"Bring the Noize" - Anthrax with Public Enemy

"The Mercy Seat" - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

"Sex Machine" - The Flying Lizards

"Electricity" - OMD (also "Talking Loud and Clear")

"Blasphemous Rumours" - Depeche Mode

"Getoutoflondon" - Intaferon

"Psychotic Reaction" - Nash the Slash w lyrics by John Hinkley

8. Thomas Dolby
I bought the CD of Golden Age of Wireless last month, and it's been in heavy rotation since. Actually I generally skip "She Blinded Me with Science," because everything else feels really fresh and new right now. "Airwaves," which I used to think was just another dorky song about the radio, turns out to be this really cryptic song that seems to be the diary of a terrorist bomber, and the chord changes are totally gorgeous.

I second all the mentions of Gang of Four, but if you like them, you might want to check out this other contemporary English band called This Heat. They had two albums, and the first one was actually 1979, but the one called Deceit is really powerful-- for one thing, they do a song setting of the preamble to our Declaration of Independence, starting from "We hold these truths to be self-evident," which makes great listening in these troubled times.

10. I have "Deceit" by This Heat...it is excellent.
It's in storage right now, so I can't check, but I think it's produced by Andy Gill (Gang of Four).
