My friend Eddie Died today, or I guess yesterday
I am sad. I have not seen him for a few years, only phone calls. Most remember him for a single photo of a Vietnamese police general executing a VC with a revolver.
He was much more than that.
Eddie was a master of life, interested in everything he saw. He had an almost boyish curiosity all the time.

I remember walking with him once in Manhattan. Walking the other way was a group of the early rappers, chains, backwards hats, gold teeth, all the stuff that is now common, but then (this was, oh 1987 I guess) it was pretty uncommon. Eddie grabbed me and said, come on I wanna talk to them.

We crossed, and Eddie got them talking, then rapping and dancing (break dancing) and we sat and talked with these kids for over an hour...neither one of us had taken a picture, even though I was on deadline for a day shot and had nothing.

As we parted with the kids, I realized I had no pictures to show for that hour, and was facing deadline in 2 more... Eddie said to me some great photojournalistic advice, "Kid, don't worry about it. What we just learned is far more valuable to you than getting a day shot published. Always take a chance to learn from people who are different than you."

I never forgot that, and even though I no longer am in photojournalism, I still find that great advice from a great man.

I will miss him a great deal.

RIP EA.

2. Wow. I am so sorry. I certainly remember his contribution to history.
Nothing tells the story like a photograph like that. Sounds like a great loss to humanity.

3. Please accept my condolences on losing your friend....
The Vietnam photo is one of the most powerful images to come out of that war. The look of anguish on the face of the man about to be executed speaks volumes.

You are lucky to have known Eddie.

5. I am sad, too, Scooter
This is the one Eddie Adams often said was his own favorite of all the thousands of pictures he took.

I think it might be mine, too.

9. So sorry for your loss.
It sounds like he was an exceptional human being as well as a talented photographer.

The VC photograph is one that is etched into my memory permanently. It is one of the most haunting photographs I have ever seen.

10. I'm sorry for your loss, Scooter.
Your friend Eddie seemed to look at life with his heart and soul and he tried to share what he saw with the rest of us. Thank you for sharing your memory of that 'afternoon'.

Good thoughts through cyberspace to you and all of Eddie's friends.
