While comparing the wealthy to the wild might seem a little harsh, author Richard Conniff says it makes perfect sense. In his book, The Natural History of the Rich, Conniff writes that executives climbing to the top of corporate ladders exhibit mannerisms that are quite similar to those displayed by silverback gorillas.
"It's chest-beating. It's glowering," Conniff told ABCNEWS' Good Morning America. "You know, that kind of quick, sharp stare."

While corporate types may not literally beat their chests in the middle of a meeting, they often perform the verbal equivalent.

"These people all dominate with shouting, tyrannizing people and by sheer physical presence," Conniff said. "And that's exactly what an alpha male does in a chimp troupe or among gorillas."

As for this alpha male bullshit it is easy to bully people in the corporate world if one accepts the notion the harshest consequence for a boardroom bully is hostility and anger returned verbally in kind. Because then it is just a game and the best poser wins. Does anyone really think any ceo could get away with this act if a real ass kicking was the consequence? Let them try that alpha male shit on the max security wing of a juvenile facility let alone an adult facility. Plenty of alpha males willing to stick a shank in the neck of a poser trying to look tough on the tier. Which leads me to my final conclusion, if white collar criminals were tried and convicted for their crimes at the same rate as poor underprivileged criminals would the boardroom feature a different vibe than the one discussed in the article?
