What is your favorite hot dog stand?
Mine used to be Hot Doug's on Roscoe, but they had a fire and have not re-opened. I ate lunch today at Gene & Jude's on River Road. 5 stars.

1. The Original Hot Dog Shop (not really a stand)
In the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, PA. Also known as the "O".Perhaps best known for their rude service and ridiculously huge portions of French fries.

2. Right under the huge cow in Munster Indiana.
There's a dog stand in front of a butcher's shop in Munster that features the best & biggest brats I've ever had. If only they sold beer...

4. I liked the little hot dog shaped carts
one used to see in the French Quarter in NOLA. Referred to as the " hottest meat on Bourbon street "

Cute.

11. The only hot dog carts good enough to launch a novel!
"A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole. No, it's not about the present administration :-) but about medieval scholar Ignatius J. Reilly, who is unemployable enough that he ends up pushing one of those very same carts through the Quarter, with hilarious results. A must read.

We once had a DUer called "myrna minx" after Ignatius' girlfriend.

Here's hoping the present-day hot dog carts -- and hot dog eaters! -- will still be there by the weekend... :scared:

12. yes yess - They are an institution.
I had transient traveling friends who operated one back in 73.
One friend had to get up front and personal with an obnoxious inebriated upper class male who after being warned several times was trounced. After which my friend appologized to him adding " I warned you several times" as the guy slunk away.

In the crowd of bystanders watcing the event, was a person who asked my friend, " where are you boys from ?" My friend said " We're from New York City. " and the crowd broke into spontainious applause. True storey. Fear and Loathing in Mardi Gras 1973/

5. 'The Hot Spot' at 165th & Halsted.
Gene & Jude's is great. I haven't eaten there in years, since I'm a Southsider these days, but back when I travelled around Chicagoland a lot...I loved to stop in at Gene & Jude's.

But my new place is The Hot Spot. Everything they make is delicious, especially the beef and the dogs. Oh, and the gyros is quite good too.

6. OKI DOG......
OKI DOG
(former location)
Santa Monica & Vista

Oki became a punk hangout in the late seventies, probably because it was close to the Starwood and other Hollywood clubs, it was open late and made burritos as big as your arm for under $3. Plus it had a nice big parking lot for socializing. But soon the police and the neighbors put a damper on the fun. You can find other Oki Dog locations in Los Angeles with the same fine menu. Pastrami burritos are a specialty

10. Charcoal for char-dogs?
Cool. At Comisky Park they have good char-dogs with grilled onions. I'm a Cubs fan and those dogs are the reason I go to 35th and Shields (and to see Icharo).

9. There was this little hole in the wall place
just up the road from my apartment complex in Lawrence KS. 50 cent hotdogs with a whole array of stuff to put on it at no extra charge. They had these finely chopped really sweet onions that were great!

Man I need a dog.
