A mother who police said was so drunk she slept while a kitchen fire sent smoke billowing through the apartment she shared with two infant children was charged with child endangerment early Sunday.
Latesha Daniels could not be roused when first neighbors and then firefighters banged on the door at 12 Bogart Terrace to evacuate the smoky apartment shortly after midnight.
"The entire first floor was filled with smoke," Detective James Miller said. "She was still passed out when firefighters broke down the door."
Daniels had to be rescued from her home along with her 20-month-old and 10-month-old infant children, who were found sleeping in a bedroom. They were carried out and examined by paramedics, Miller said. Neither child required hospital treatment.
The fire allegedly was caused by food left burning on the stove. The fire did not spread beyond the stove, Miller said.
Miller said police gave Daniels an alcohol breath test. "She blew twice the legal limit," he said.
