So I was listening to the Flaming Lips (The Soft Bulletin) , minding my own business, and this idiot sees me with the jewelcase out. He says "The Flaming Lips ... most like, Flaming Emo." Bad joke aside, I didn't want to get into how the Lips are about as anti-emo as you can get, what with the synthesizers and their unique brand of lyrics. So I just kind of smiled at him and flipped the bird.

Idiots like these make me wonder how I can inhabit the same planet as them.

7. It's way overused.

It's been so overused it's lost all meaning. Basically, if people want to say that a band sucks, they just call it emo even though they have no idea what it means.

"Emo bands" are basically whiny rich-boy type bands who still whine even when the millions of dollars come in. I can't think of the band name right now, but there's this song my sister listens to all the time that's the perfect example of emo.

I've never been told personally they're emo, but I've heard other people talking about them.

Good god - there's a difference between being totally lame emo (Blink182 post-Chesire Cat for example) and being good music (Shins, Lips, ... I actually had someone tell me Zepellin was emo but later revealed he was joking).

They're classic power pop. But, then, I've seen magazines refer to Green Day as punk, too. My guess would be, the writers of these articles probably aren't old enough to remember The Pistols, though.

And that's not necessarily to put down Green Day -- I'm not all that fond of them, but it's purely personal taste, I don't think they suck. I just don't think they're punk.

And emo? Live, Creed -- that's emo. The Flaming Lips ... I dunno, but they sure ain't emo, you're absolutely right!

15. Stupid Terms Like "Emo"

Are a direct result of "alternative" radio stations that play Matchbox 20 and other modern rock shite, that need a new term for music that's inline with what alternative as originally defined (alternative to rock). Because otherwise, you might realize there's nothing alternative about Finger Eleven.
