Poll question: My landlord just put up a Bush sign, what should I do?
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 04:41 PM by Nikia
The neighbors, who shared the duplex with us, moved out at the of August. Next to the "duplex for rent sign" he put up a Bush/Chaney sign. I find this somewhat annoying. Unfortunately, we have reason not to want him angry at us. We don't want to get evicted for paying our rent late, not keeping our place clean enough, or anything else like that. So what should we do?

1. Landlords can ruin your life
Better to just let this slide.

16. I agree with this one.
Someone said not to do this because we get mad when people rip down our signs. But in this case he's putting a sign in an area which, while he owns it, is occupied by others that may not share this view. I think it should quietly disappear in the night.

there's a couple of things i'd think about...

1. you could squirt ketchup all over it.

2. you could make some witty graffiti on it.

3. run it over with your car, and leave two big mud tracks on the lawn, and the tipped over sign.

4. spray paint it with a dayglo kerry/edwards or perhaps a big red circle wiht a slash through it.

all of these must be done in the dark of night. ;)

6. You might want to point out to him
that he risks alienating half the population--he wants to rent that place out, right? Why would a Dem want to rent from him?

As long as it's on his property there's not much you can do about it. You can put a Kerry sign in your front window!

13. Maybe he wants to rent to a Republican
Who knows? I thought that too. If we were looking for a place to rent, that sign would scare us away. I would assume that he would would want to rent it out. He owns a lot of duplexes. He lives in a nice subdivision. There don't seem to be any other indications that he wants to make it into the local offices to reelect Bush. If people do move in while that sign is still up, I guess that we'll know something about our new neighbors.

9. Pay your rent on time, and put up a Kerry/Edwards sign
Even if you don't pay on time, there's nothing he can do if it's just a month or less late. As for keeping the place clean.... pshaw... none of his business.

10. I agree with letting the sign slip away in the night.
You can't afford to piss your landlord off and talking to him about it or putting up a Kerry/Edwards sign opposing his might do just that. But unless word gets back to him that you're the responsible party you can take down the signs as fast as he puts them up.

12. speaking as a landlord
of a small (5-unit) building, I've actually been getting nagged by my tenants for not getting the Kerry/Edwards signs fast enough. We've had the Feingold, Stop the War, and Gay Rights (or something like that) signs up for a while. Despite the fact that we have a vacant unit right now, I would rather alienate some potential renters than find myself renting to freepers. There would be a mutiny in the building if we let freepers in!

Of course, we have a great group of tenants - one wonderful environmentally-active retired woman, a single woman doctor with her child, a lesbian couple with their child, and a Japanese PhD student (who can't vote here anyway, but I know is a liberal). They've all watched my copy of "Outfoxed," and they've loaned it out to former tenants!

Hey, anyone in Madison want to rent a nice two-bedroom apartment on the near-west side? :D

OH, and to answer your question, if that Bu/Fu sign disappeared in the dead of night, who's to know who took it?

14. you know in the past few weeks, I've read about 50 threads at DU
about DU members getting their signs ripped down, then everyone piles on about what a bunch of shits people are who tear down signs that express your political beliefs.

ya really have to be a filthy filthy pos to get evicted. even then it's hard. if you pay rent, even if it is late every now and again, again eviction is tough and expensive.

it's his property. you could put a sign up in you window. don't mess with his property-you might find that if you vandlise his junk, he'll have a much better reason than you being a sloppy housekeeper or a couple days late with the rent to kick your sweet ass out.

concentrate on getting better and staying well-if you put this much energy into that, you mind find yourself healing after all that tummy stuff...

stay well, nikia. put the blinders on here.
