Anyone have a good Cole Slaw recipe?
We're going to a fish fry tonight and I'm to bring the cole slaw. I have some excellent home-grown cabbage to use.

My mom made the BEST coleslaw, but she hasn't made it in years and could only tell me: Miracle Whip, vinegar, sugar - no proportions
:-( and there's too many recipes on the web, so I don't know which of those are 'good'.

So, wonderful DUers, would you care to share your best coleslaw recipe? Thanks in advance. :-)

1. Ma Tobey's Yankee Slaw Dressing
In a 2 cup measuring cup

1/2 C Cider or wine vinegar

1/2 cup sugar, stir or whisk 'til dissolved. If you want the slaw a little tarter use a little less sugar.

1 C mayo

A couple grinds fresh black pepper
about a t of celery seed.

Whisk together.

remember that dressed slaw will pull a lot of water out of the cabbage so dress sparingly and let it rest in the fridge for an hour or so, then test it.

I also use the same dressing on a salad of thinly sliced cucumber and Vidalia onion. Kick Ass.

Woof

2. Always go with Alton Brown
He's da man:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_21577,00.html

1/2 head green cabbage, thinly sliced
1/2 head red cabbage, thinly sliced
1 carrot, thinly sliced
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 fluid ounces plain yogurt
2 fluid ounces mayonnaise
1 tablespoon pickle juice
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon chives, chopped
Kosher salt, as needed
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

Generously salt the cabbage and drain in colander for 3 hours. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
In a separate bowl, combine all of the ingredients except the cabbage and carrot. Whisk to combine evenly. Toss the cabbage and carrot with the dressing.

5. well
it didn't on the show.

Besides, I like fuschia! :D

I've just learned to default to Alton when I'm looking for a recipe. They tend to be nice and basic, and allow me to move from there.

3. Use sweet pickle vinegar
instead of regular vinegar and sugar. It already has lots of herbs in it like onions, and dill and mustard seeds.

Get the freshest head of cabbage you can find. Shred it finely.

Don't overdo it on the Miracle Whip, just enough to make it clump together.

Forget about carrots. They add nothing.

Sorry, I can't make cole slaw with a recipe. I do it the way my grandma taught me: do it til it looks right.

6. Cole Slaw recipe
Just chop the cabbage fine as you like, add mayo-Krafts is what I like- and mix 1 part vinegar, 2 parts suger, 1 or 2 parts water, and mix with the mayo. Adjust the taste if you like more sour or more sweet. I dont throw in carrots or onions.

7. Well, you're probably gone by now, but

Shred one head of cabbage. Grate 3-4 carrots over cabbage. Whisk together two cups mayo, equal amounts of sugar and red wine vinegar to taste (Usually 4 TBLSP. each), 1 TBLSP. celery seed. 1 TSP. fresh ground pepper. Pour over cabbage and carrots, mix lightly, and refrigerate.

For something a little different, slice up two bananas and add to all.

You can also add raisins if you want.

Go to http://choice-recipes.com/recipes_slaw.htm for Curry-Bacon slaw, or Blue Cheese Slaw.

Now I'm getting hungry !
