First, I want to thank everyone at DU for their tolerance. I'm glad I found you guys, because my family and friends are getting sick of my obsession with this election.
As a Union President, part of my work involves campaigning and educating my members about John Kerry and other local Labor friendly candidates.
This is still not enough for me. I kick on to DU with my morning coffee. I use it at work, since as President of the local, information about this election is part of my job. Then I go right back to it after supper.
Since I'm from Massachusetts, my main focus has been working in N.H for Kerry and reaching each of my New Hampshire members in an effort to try and secure that state for us.
Some say that I won't be able to handle a Kerry defeat. My response to that is that this isn't about me or John Kerry, it's about you.
You see, Kerry will be just fine, win or lose, and so will I.
I have no children, step or otherwise. My wife and I have good jobs that can't be outsourced. I'm 51 years old and own my own home. We have health care, and I feel that my Union position is as safe as Hillary Clinton's Senate seat.
I fear for my friends. They have children of draft age. Their jobs are not so secure. They need their present jobs to provide health care for their families, and the cost is up 40% in three years. Our Social Security as baby boomers is in jeopardy, just look at the statement by Alan Greenspan today.
Unions are under assault, and so are our freedoms. Look about you, there is fear and division everywhere. Our once mighty nation has lost its respect from other nations. Even Canada hates us.
I put up a recent thread that asked if there was a single nation in the entire world that supported this government. Not the government of another country, but the people of that country. I can't think of a single one, either. Right now, most of the world can differentiate between the U.S. Government under George Bush and his henchmen, and the people of America.
But will they continue to separate us if Bush is Re-elected? I think not. Not only will those shortsighted idiots that vote for and support Bush be to blame, but so will we.
If we can't convince our brethren in our country of the evil that is so obvious, we should also shoulder some of the responsibility. If Bush is Re-elected, our great nation will be the scourge of the world, and none of us will escape that blame.
I am obsessed with this election, and I wouldn't have it any other way. When this is over, win or lose, I will be able to hold my head up high and say that I did all that I could do, and my country is better for it.
Let me leave you with this quote from Mark Twain.... A true Patriot supports his country all the time, but his government only when it deserves it.
