LXG = WWW?
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen looks like Wild Wild West all over again: overblown, underwriteen steampunk crap that will disappear after its opening weekend, leaving a gaping hole in the studio's ledgers. When will they learn?

Thoughts?

1. It's an intelligent comic, crappy movie.

The thing about LXG is that it's supposed to be Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues under the Sea (I think that's Sean Connery), meets Mina Harker from Dracula, meets Dorian Gray, meets the Invisible Man, meets Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde meets Allan Quartermain. They form a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

VERY cool. If you're a fan of literature of the period, it's got all these insider things.

But, in the movie, they said hey, Americans won't care unless there's an American in it--so they put in TOM STINKIN SAWYER.

All these major villains/guys who had bad stuff happen to them, and then you put in Pollyanna Sawyer. For no reason. Ugh.

3. Don't get me wrong; I LIKE the idea...
...it just looks very poorly realized as a film adaptation.

6. For sure.
I was pretty excited when I heard about it, thought it was a good premise, fascinating characters...

Then I heard about Tom Sawyer, then I saw the trailers.

Sigh.

2. So it's not an X-Men ripoff?
Either way, either those were bad clips featuring Connery, or Connery is just annoying these days. (He was great AT THE TIME as Bond, but he's still wooden.)

4. NOOOOOOO....

No way.

They're all supposed to be badass. And really, BAD.

Quartermain's on heroin, Hyde's crazy, Mina's a vampire, Dorian Gray has lived a life of who knows what (if you know his story, LOL)....

And oh yeah, it's got James Bond's great grandad or something, Campion Bond (who is NOT in the movie).

Connery looks overblown, but that's because he's playing Nemo, who is an overblown asshole.ON EDIT--Actually, Connery is Quartermain.
Hmm.

Doesn't come across well in a trailer, and frankly, the rest of the film doesn't look so great either (Tom Sawyer! EWWW!)

Here are some notes on the comics. It's a shame what they're doing to it, LOL! The comic is done by Alan Moore, who I think did some other comic too...Watchman or something??

5. Best review from Joel Siegal
http://us.imdb.com/StudioBrief/

On ABC's Good Morning America critic Joel Siegel led off his review of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by remarking on the extraordinary acting talent of one of its stars, Sean Connery. "I'd pay to watch him read the morning paper and drink a cup of coffee," Siegel commented, then added: "I'd rather do than watch The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," which Siegel described as "every action movie this summer lumped together in one big ... lump."

When watching someone read a paper becomes more exciting than watching a movie, you know it's bad!
