Why do some DUers feel it necessary to correct posters?
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 04:31 PM by jedicord
I tend to post quickly, since I'm at work. Sometimes I make minor mistakes, i.e. today I said I'd vote for Hermit the Frog over Bush, of course meaning Kermit the Frog.

Someone had to make the "Hermit?" remark. No other comment, just correcting.

Does anyone else out there have better things to comment on? I'm not trying to cause a flame, I'm truly curious.

I'm gone in 1/2 hour, so if this flames, let's carry on tomorrow.

On edit: See, I told y'all I post in a hurry! Just testing you! ;-)

4. when people don't agree with what you write
that is their way of lashing out by attempting to make you look dumb(often times, maybe not always). To me it makes the originator of the criticism look petty and prissy more then it makes the "offender" look dumb.

7. People who correct others
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 04:43 PM by Bushneedstogo
Have problems in their life and they feel the need to put someone else down. I feel that they are below the person that they are correcting.

9. Also a mean way to get post numbers up, I think...
I'm a perfectionist, so I probably take it more personally than others would. I'll take your thoughts to heart next time.

15. My post numbers?
I have been on here for going on 2 years and if my post numbers aren't up they never will be.

I don't like people correcting punctuation or spelling errors.

16. Me too.
I've been here about that long, and tend to only post when I have something to say that hasn't been said (or I didn't know has been said).

I'd rather give someone food for thought for the campaign/politics, or get food for thought.

12. Whew! That was close! Now I won't go through life...
mis-naming Kermit the Frog!

I'm talking about innocent mistakes such as this, where everyone knew who I meant. If I had misnamed a governmental official, PLEASE correct me!

11. I would have corrected you because...
... Hermit the Frog is a fascist pig, and I'm certain you wouldn't want people to misunderstand your intentions.

Kermit the Frog, on the other hand, rules!

17. Agree, but only to a point.
An obvious typo or misspelling I'm not going to bother correcting, as it would, indeed, just indicate some shortcoming of mine.

But when things posted as FACTS are simply inaccurate, then HELL YEAH I'm gonna correct someone! After all, we don't wanna look like Freeper morans here on DU, do we?

That being said, I LIKE Hermit the Frog.

19. Learn to spell and think clearly. It’s to your benefit.
If someone wishes to take to the time to express themselves then they should take the time to express themselves properly. Misspelled words and similar errors in a posting don’t reflect well on the person making the mistakes and they undermine the credibility of both the forum and the people contributing to it – no matter the subject. If you want someone to spend the time to read what you are writing and take it seriously, then you must first take the time and effort to make it worth such consideration in the first place.

In general, accepting a lower common denominator doesn’t improve any situation. An acceptance of lower standards in almost every aspect of interpersonal communication, and arguably in social discourse in general, is partially responsible for the social/political climate in which we struggle today.

Detail and accuracy are *always* important, or they should be. Don’t defend errors, correct them – leave the defending of errors, grammatical gaffes and mispronounced words to the experts in the White House & FOX News.

20. I'm gonig leave every usage error in your post
uncommented on. I thought of listing them but I think not doing so makes the point more succinctly.

These aren't term papers. They're not submitted for publication. These are posts... and in the LOUNGE, FCOL.
