The Italians have a similar fish dish called bacala. I saw it in the market yesterday.

Lutefisk is nasty stuff. My mom made it once, and no one would eat it.

I think that it is salt dried rather than air dried so the lye might not be necessary. It took my mom about 4 annual tries before she got it to be good, but now she is a master.

Was born in Norway (his parents immigrated to Beloit, Wis., when he was three). He did three Viet Nam TDYs in the Navy, (he's for Kerry, btw) but he maintains "to be a man", you have to try--and successfully eat--at least one piece of Lutefisk. I still don't see how Bill Geist managed to do it at that Minnesota festival for "Sunday Morning"...ughhhhhhh!:eyes:
