How could I have birthed such a carnivore???
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 09:01 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
Tonight we were having a breakfast dinner: pancakes and bacon. Just pancakes for me.

My nine year old daughter picks up a piece of bacon and says to it: "Oh piggie your flesh tastes SOOOOO good!" Then she eats it with her eyes closed, moaning.

As a semi-vegetarian, I was a bit grossed out by this. I've told her how the pigs are killed and everything. Fazes her none.

How could I have birthed such a carnivore?

Edited to add the bacon is in the house ONLY because of the husband. Otherwise, I wouldn't buy it.

4. I eat Gardenburgers
mmmm, pizza Gardenburgers ROCK. I have gotten her to drink soy milk and eat organic. Even our meat is organic/free of hormones/fed pesticide-free feed, etc.

But I think someday she'll be lying on a therapist's couch talking about the time I made her eat Annie's Organic Beanies and Weenies.

Tofu weenies, Mmmmmm!!!!

29. There are all kinds of great meatless options out there
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 04:07 AM by Rhiannon12866
But I prefer just veggies, pasta and pizza. There are meatless varieties that taste like beef, sausage, bacon or chicken. The best are sold at health food stores, but they are increasingly in regular groceries, probably due to the demand.

on edit: check out the Vegetarian Times website. I subscribe to both their magazine and newsletter. There are always considerable ads for the best meat substitutes.:-)

At least she's (sort of) thanking the piggie. Ok, at least ACKNOWLEDGING that it was a piggie.

7. She once thanked a hamburger
in this way: "Thank you cow. I know you are dead now. But I am going to enjoy you." She was about six or seven.

or at least gets your attention

Try smiling and ignoring it.

12. Oh I laughed
because it just seems so incredibly sincere and it's funny to see a nine year old do and say those things.

But good point....if I was getting in a tizzy I could totally see that being her motivation.

6. I tried that
make sure not to ever let them actually GO anywhere or spend the night with friends or anything, because that's how the corruption starts---they get older and get exposed to different things.

I want her to develop her own opinions and mostly choose what she wants to eat (within healthy limits, of course!!!). When she was a wee thing, she went along with vegetarianism JUST fine and at around four or five, she'd cry if she saw meat and say "poooor cow!" Now she tells the hamburger patty how much she is going to enjoy eating it.

Ug.

But I hear ya. Just never let them go out of the house.

5. Oh sweetie, we just aren't wired to be vegetarians at birth.
It takes a conscious effort (and one I can't make cause I really have to work to get enough calories to maintain my weight).

but my son would be totally non-plussed without teh occasional hamburger. I refuse to cook beef here, though.

The bacon story is really funny. I love how kids talk.

24. yes, the 30 year war is the reason for that
Many German customs, dishes and drinks can be traced back to that war, or rather the famine during it.

19. well at least she thanked the cow...
she has that much going for her, at least she knows something had to be scarificed in order for her to eat.

And don't question yourself. Parents ask that all the time. My right wing, christian, conservative, anti-abortion, pro-NRA, Bush is God Mom and Dad wonder where they went wrong too :)

20. From an inveterate carnivore...
That ain't so bad. I actually make it a point to eat as many animals as I can in a single sitting. Once, I went to this French restaurant. Started with escargot, then had a grill plate with veal, fillet mignon, lamb shanks, and various sausages. It was a veritable barn in my tummy. Best meal ever.

21. HAHAHAHA!!! What a funny kid!
You might have a budding comedian on your hands... or a cannibal. Kids say the darndest things! You are so lucky to have such a bright and creative child. I'd bet my emty pockets that she did it to mess with you, and it's likely her dad gave her some inspiration.

I've been an adult for decades but I still enjoy watching people get sick when I suck the brains out of crawfish. Mmm...

23. So what if she did that???
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 12:32 AM by northwest
Not to be curt, but I don't think parents should raise their kids (when they're older) to be vegetarian, or to be omnivores. I think parents should let their children to decide by themselves. Kids who are raised to be vegetarians are being fed the anti-meat agenda into their heads by their parents, and as a result, put down other people who eat meat when they're older. I would never raise my child to be a vegetarian, but I would also not teach them to put down the eating habits of other people.

Believe me, I've heard lots of stories about people (friends of friends) who belittle others because of their eating meat. And it happens when the parents push an anti-meat agenda on their kids, then they grow up thumbing their noses down on people who eat meat.

I need to find a fellow carnivore. I eat about a two pounds of meat every day. Chicken, beef, tuna, pork ANYTHING!

28. She sounds adorable, but if this bothers you,
maybe it is time for a long talk with her. I'm not much of a meat-eater, either. I just have the occasional chicken or fish, and my vet has had me cook liver for my dogs. Did it, for them, but hated it.:puke:

30. Bacon is like crack.
It's fattening, full of toxic nitrites, and still people love it.

You think they're gonna fret about the pig?

At least it doesn't have mad cow!

I'm fully aware of the horrors of factory farming. For that and health reasons, I've made an effort to reduce my meat consumption.

But I enjoy it, and would not like to give it up altogether.

And it's REALLY easy to put all the "issues" out of my head when eating it.

I guess we meat-lovers are wired a bit differently.

I'm cool with vegetarians so long as they're not preachy (like my friend who used to complain when I'd eat a burger that "stunk of blood and death")

But I also hate meat eaters who eat meat and try to make a big display of it just to offfend some vegetarian. It should be a matter of choice.

BTW, I do participate in the KFC boycott. Popeyes is my new chicken joint.
