Is Anyone Else Watching the VH1 Documentary about Music in Iraq?
There's a documentary on VH1 about the influence of music in Iraq. What soldiers listen to before they go to battle, and a lot of the music they listen to is heavy metal. It seems to me that by listening to heavy metal, it dehumanizes the mission they're about to take, and removes the soldiers from what it means to kill another person.

2. I listen to heavy metal and I'm a pretty sensitive guy

Then again, not all metal is created equal. Most of the stuff I listen to has socially conscious lyrics and some are anti-war. There is a category of metal that I like to call chest thumping metal that's all about what bad asses they are. That's probably what the fellas in Iraq are listening to. I seriously doubt it's "Blackened" or "Disposeable Heros" by Metallica. I heard something about that show that a song called "Bodies" by Drowning Pool was a favorite amongst the soldiers. Some of the lyrics are, "Let the bodies hit the floor." That's definitely chest thumping material.

4. no big surprise there....
back in the "old days", when we'd be getting "suited up" to go out kicking in doors, we'd play pretty hardcore music, to put us in the mood to deal with whatever we met by focusing our attention.

Music was almost as important to us as our mgs and breaching charges....Put a bunch of guys in a van, wearing body armor, carrying machineguns and DDs, and crank Clutch's "Binge and Purge" up to 11 while driving wherever, and when they get out, whomever is there on the receiving end isn't going to enjoy it.
