Dog lovers check in.
Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 10:42 PM by liberal72
I notice many threads started about cats and just thought dogs were being left out. While I don't hate cats I prefer dogs. They are a human's best friend, loyal, not condescending, loving and protective. So if you prefer dogs speak up. Just so you know our family owns a Bichon Frise.

He was a stray picked up by animal control. I adopted him from the SPCA. Got him treatment for heartworms and he is fine now. Best, sweetest, most well-behaved dog I've ever had!

he can come in and get another cookie, but I'm not falling for it. (He needs to lose weight).

He is the best dog with kids. Totally non-aggressive and patient. I adopted him after I hit him with a car (I tried to stop, he was jaywalking - running actually) and no one claimed him. Poor baby, four breaks in two legs.

It was fate. We literally ran into each other.

Kyra is spoiled rotten, raised two kittens (Enki and Xander) on her own, looks all to glam in her 2 1'2" x 22" long rhinestone collar... has her own couch, her side of the bed, her seat in the car, and should someone decide to sit there, she plunks her 90 pound butt on them. She is an affection sponge, the tighter you hold her, the more she nuzzles and will stay like that for as long as you want.

Edited on Wed Aug-11-04 11:18 PM by liberalmuse
We got her at six months. She was truly awful and no one would except her in their obedience school. We used to joke about dropping her off in an alley behind China town (Chows were a delicacy in China).

Now I know why Martha Stewart is such a bitch. She has 3 Chow Chows. So far, my dog has twisted my ankle, dragged me through a mud puddle and just recently this past weekend, dragged me down a mountain while we were hiking during which I buckled and twisted my knee and ended up in pain all weekend, but even so, she treats me better than my teen.

She can also be the most lovable, cuddly, sweet dog. No one greets me with as much joy after a long day as she does. These are great dogs, but they are very high maintenance, extremely strong (they'll pull you off your feet in a heartbeat) and very sensative, but worth it!

35. We Have Both
We have, right now, a big doggie and two kitties. They all live inside exclusively and hang around together.

At one point, we had the dog and 4 cats, but two have since died of old age. (One at almost 19 y/o.)

So, i guess my answer to your question is that they don't have to be mutually exclusive.

42. Don't Know If It's Preference or Need
The dog needs more attention. They are needier than cats. But, our cats are always around. My wife probably is partial to the cats, but loves the dog. I'm likely the vice versa.

Also, i have MS. So, having the big beast around is useful on tough mornings, because he can help me up and down the steps. The cats can't.

So, he needs me more than kitties do, and i need him at times in a way that a cat CAN'T fulfill.

I hope that answers the question rather than looking like a dodge and duck.

39. I am both a cat and dog lover.
I don't love one more than the other. My aussie is wonderful, and intense in her attachment to me. She is almost always well-behaved, highly intelligent, loving, and playful.

Her only drawback is in social situations. She loves people; convincing her not to jump on them or overcrowd them demanding attention is difficult. What she knows she is not supposed to to with me goes out the window when she finds someone who doesn't know how to stop her. She loves other dogs, and gets overly excited, wanting to invite them to play. But in a crowded situation, she is easily overstimulated, and those herding instincts can cause problems.

Like yesterday; we went to the local vaccination clinic. It was too hot to spread us out outdoors, so we were crammed into the little waiting room at the vets; people, cats, and dogs. She was very concerned that all of those other dogs were threatening her territory (me), and I had to lock her down to keep her from lunging at them. When no dog actually approached me, she then wanted to meet her doggy neighbors, and I had to restrain her from trying to start a playgroup in the middle of the reception room. At home, and in less instense environments, we don't have this kind of problem.

There is a puppy pic of her in the DU gallery; I should probably update it with an adult pic, now that she's a year old, but haven't gotten around to it.

62. She is a great "trail dog;"
She regularly (except in the summer heat) goes out on trail rides, with me alone or with small to large groups. She never goes beyond 10-20 yards away, and prefers to follow right behind my horse's heels. With a group, no matter the size, she ranges from front to back, back to me, and then again, periodically "counting heads" to make sure everybody is together. We've all watched her check in with each and every rider/horse, then circle back to me, then repeat the process. If other dogs are along, they are added to her list. She takes her job of keeping us all together very seriously! At home, she checks in with the cat and the hens several times a day; never aggressive, although my cat prefers less enthusiastic washing. ;-) If you are in my "group," person or animal, she's going to keep making sure we stick together.

Edited on Thu Aug-12-04 12:13 PM by Monica_L
My Jessie girl is 14 and she's a beagle shepherd mix. Extremely smart dog---problem-solving smart. Not to mention great personality and smile. She likes to be on sentry duty whenever we're out or when everyone's in bed. We're convinced she's a human being in a dog's body. Everybody who comes into our house ends up speaking right to her because you can see the intelligence in her face and eyes.

(She was almost famous--had a great audition on David Letterman's Stupid Pet Tricks but got nixed for a dog who snaps at the spray coming out of a hose.) x(

My Hallie girl (4yr old) is the total dumb beagle but cute as a button. She's speckled. She is the most affectionate dog I've ever owned or have ever seen. When she looks at you petting her belly there's love oozing out of every inch of her.

I like cats too but too many people around me have allergies.

48. Poms
have ruled our home for the last 8 years. We have 3 (Bear, who is a softie; Missy, a real lady; and Daisy, a might teacup terror that is also known as squirrel).

Over the past 30 years, we've had peekapoos, mutts, cats, hamsters, gerbils, parakeets, etc. that have come to us through rescues/shelters and/or just being in the right place at the right time.

We believe each have truly been one of the family. And when we've lost them, initially our hearts broken into bits; but, we work through the grief by remembering all the love and opening our hearts up to a new member for the family. I don't know that I could survive if I didn't have a 4-legged child (or children) around.

51. I have a dog and a cat, and I like them both
Katie, my dog, is a great companion, she worships the ground I walk on and is totally trustworthy with small children. She is really cute, too. She is brown, black and white, weighs about 45 pounds and the Humane Society called her a shepard/chow mix. She really looks more like an akita, but the vet says she's probably a norwegian elkhound.

My cat is Miranda and the two get along well. They play together, lay next to each other sometimes and don't fight very often. Miranda has recently got onto this kick where she licks Katie's face. It's really sweet, but she's not like other cats. She's always had a dog to play with.

Does anyone here remember his story from last February? :)
I need to scan and post his picture.

Poor fella doesn't know he's a big boy now though...over 70 lbs and he's not even a year old yet. He still thinks he's a lap dog. Cute for him, not so cute for my lap.

He gives a ton of hugs, he knows how to shake hands, and he's a sucker for a belly scratch.

If I could only get him to stop licking the coffee table he'd be perfect.
