Tragic: Newlywed killed in crash as wife drives in car behind
<snip>

The last three months of Jeremy Bodeman's life were a pleasant whirlwind.

In May, the 29-year-old San Francisco man graduated from San Francisco State University with a marketing degree. The same month, he got hired for a job in the city with a prestigious marketing firm. And then on July 31, he married his fiancee, Kristen Peterson, in a ceremony in Atlanta.

The couple had barely returned from their honeymoon in the Bahamas when they visited his parents in Aptos (Santa Cruz County) Monday night -- driving in two cars, to be able to bring home all the wedding gifts they had left at his parents' home.

Before leaving Aptos, Bodeman said he was tired -- but turned down his father's offer to accompany him.

A short time later, at 11:11 p.m., as his wife followed behind, Bodeman's Volkswagen van drifted off Highway 85 in Mountain View and crashed at full speed into a tree north of Fremont Avenue.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

See, that's why I never let myself get too happy about anything. I just know I'll get hit by a bus or something. Anyway, with posts like yours there's probably no danger of me becoming too ecstatic and tempting fate.

3. Very sad but a reminder of the dangers of drowsy driving
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conservatively estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue each year. This results in an estimated 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary losses.

7. I ran off the road that way once
Thank god there were no trees or telephone poles around...I just ran into a cornfield at 60+ MPH and came to a VERY quick stop. A week of 18 hour workdays topped by 2 hour commutes is a baaaad idea.

If you're tired, don't drive. If you must drive, at least take some NoDoze or something.

4. Matcom, how did you miss this story? "Wedding guests eat relative"
MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Four members of a family have been arrested and charged with murder for allegedly killing and eating a relative during a wedding reception -- and serving his flesh to unwitting party guests, police have said.

Maybe I'm having a bad day at work, but I gotta admit this story brought a smile to my face...

8. I remember driving home one day ...
from Lawrence, Kansas to KC. There were no cars on the highway, I was exhausted, and I became hypnotized by the median strip. At one point I began to descend down a long hill. An instant later I woke up with a startle, and noticed I was at the top of the crest of the next hill. While I was asleep I must have descended all the way to the bottom and climbed the hill - had to be half a minute. It scared me to death; I pulled over immediately and slept after I stopped shaking.
