Yikes.. My son & his fiancee were just in a car accident..
A half block from his apartment, a nursing home van ran a stop sign and hit the passenger side of her new car.. The airbag deployed oddly and really hurt Steven's neck , he got some sort of a chemical burn from what's in the airbag ,and he was cut up a bit, but other than that they are ok..

The car was totalled.. a new bug..

I always worry on holiday weekends when he likes to go to the river, but it's true that "most" accidents happen near your home..

Maria hurt her ankle a little, and banged her shoulder.. This is the 3rd accident that he has been in as a passenger.. None have been the fault of the driver..

Sheeesh... even when they grow up and move away, that damned "phone call" can always happen :(

Thanking my lucky stars that I got better news than my friend Connie got last year..:( The one year anniversary is coming up on Jeff's death and it's hitting her very hard.. We have spent a few weepy evenings , and there will be many more, I am sure.. I am not even going to tell her about this accident.. :( It would be too much like me whining about a "cut" when she had an "amputation"..

I'll just share with you guys..

1. Oh jeez
I'm so glad it was not worse . That is wierd
about the airbag , I know kids aren't supposed
to be in the front seat if there is an airbag
because of injury ..But I hadn't heard that they can
hurt adults .

3. He said that they were hit on his door
and the airbag did not deploy immediately, but hesitated and then hit him on the side of his face from the jaw, upwards..

11. Air bags can & do kill
The daughter of a woman I know was killed when she was T-boned on the passenger side and the air bag deployed and broke her neck. She had her seatbelt on. She was 25.

7. I got creamed in May - T-boned at an intersection.
Hurt my neck, too. But got into physical therapy and it really did help tremendously.

Warn him that he'll be a hell of a lot "sore-er" tomorrow - my doc said the pain escalates for about a week to eight days, and he was right.

Now he gets to deal with my favorite folk - the insurance companies. Be firm - demand good treatment! If they pawn off some pills and tell you it'll get better on its own, don't believe them! I had to go to an attorney to get them to let me go to physical therapy. Once I "lawyered up" they changed their tune pretty quick.

Glad to hear they're more or less OK! My airbags saved my life - I truly believe that. The only thing between me and a Lincoln Mark VII going about 45 - no braking - was my car door and a side-impact airbag. I walked away with a small abrasion on my ear.

27. Re: "I thought that Air Bags had air in them and nothing else."
Airbags use a chemical which creates an small explosion when activated, to inflate them....
And, I'm also very glad they weren't more seriously hurt, SoCal... sending good thoughts from the Pac NW.

32. Sodium Aside
The propellant used to inflate air bags is sodium aside, which can cause skin burns. Why air bag manufacturers haven't engineered a propellant that does not cause chemical burns is beyond me.

14. I'm so sorry, SoCalDem!
It's terrible about the car, but I am so glad to hear that they weren't hurt. I was hit broadside once and only ended up with whiplash. I couldn't turn my head for days. My chiropractor said I should have had an adjustment back then to relieve this, so they may want to check this out. Good luck! Rhiannon:-)

28. Glad they're okay
My dad always said he worried more about us when we left home then when we were at home. Now I know he was right. Glad your kids are okay.

On the air bag thing though, make sure his lungs are okay. I've heard stories about air bags and that chemical getting in the lung, since you mentioned chemical burns. I don't want to add any anxiety, but forewarned is forearmed and all of that.

Big hugs all around!

30. He hurts all over today, but he's ok..
Poor Maria...she paid off the car last month:(..

She hurt her foot alittle, and her neice who was in tha back seat, bumped her head a little.. They were very lucky.. He aaid that the van actually ran UP on top of the car.. The little bug ended up underneath it..

I was thinking there might be something in the paper today.. He said there were several nursing home patients in the van, and there were 5 ambulances to take them all to the hospital to be checked out..

None of them were hurt either, thankfully..

They must have been horrified! It puts chills down my spine just to think of it.

Can he take ibuprofin? That helped my body aches when I had an accident last summer...
