9. Since you seem to be a Brautigan fan...
...and sorry for changing the subject (Arlo and "Alice's" are cool, yep), I just HAVE to mention to you perhaps my favorite R.B. line, short and sweet. From "Revenge of the Lawn," and the beautiful story "Pacific Radio Fire." This line:

"His eyes were wet wounded rugs."

If anyone's summed up a heartbroken man better in six words well, I ain't read 'em. All mad props to my late mom, who gave me my first Brautigan book, years ago. Likewise to anyone who even KNOWS who this writer was and is.

Some people decide to do things based on a flash of lightning that hits them just so. It's quite possible that I decided to become a writer based on that Brautigan line. Am working to finish my first novel now. If you know any good Brautigan bios (if there are any), please let me know.

11. Terrence Malley (sp?)
has the definitive bio of him. From a lit perspective at least. His daughter's book - You can't Catch Death is a splendid personal bio. I don't know if a human has ever been better captured in a bio than she did with Richard - of course - she captured what she wanted to - I have no real idea. My avatar comes from a cropped photo in the book.

The Malley is probably best found on Ebay as it is out of print. The Ianthe Brautigan bio of her father is available on Amazon, follow the link through DU so Skinner and Co. get some cash.

Ianthe is a decent writer herself - she finished An Unfortunate Woman for her father. Sadly, the original unfinished manuascript was found under his body post suicide.

Kudo's to your mom for hooking you up. Brautigan reminds me of what was once said of the Velvet Underground, "Their first record sold 6,000 copies - and every one who bought a copy started their own band".

Likewise, I think Richard inspired thousands to write - he makes it appear effortless and so very fun and magical.

Good luck to you - I look forward to reading your work!

5. I've heard Arlo a quite a few times in concert....
and he sang a newer version of Alice's Restaurant. He talks about going to the White House during the Carter years, and being told they found a copy of Alice's Restaurant that Nixon left behind... To make a long story short, he raises a question about the amount of time it takes for Alice's Restaurant to be played on the record with the amount of time that was missing in the Nixon White Tapes. I do so love Arlo!

6. I have that on MP3, too...
22:26 instead of 18:20. He spends two minutes on how the original is 18:20.
