1. We don't ever get porn spam
I don't know why that is. We don't have a filter or a firewall or anything like that. Come to think of it, we don't get spam at all- porn or otherwise.

2. Yep
In addition to 30 or 40 legitimate messages a day, I get about an equal number of spammers (this year: Viagra up 127-1/2, cable descramblers down 12-1/8, porn sites unchanged).

And now, I'm deleting up some 150+ Sobig.F-infected messages (Re: Thank you!, Re: Your details, etc.), each and every day. And since my private addy is in the rotation for the faked "From:" field, I get another 10-20 "bounce" messages from e-mail administrators who think I'm the one sending the virus.

Finding bounces from two .gov addresses and one .mil address this morning was a tad unsettling.

That's what I get for having a nice, stable, e-mail address under my own domain for the past five years.

5. No way to stop it at the source...
...since the "source" is faked. If you want to go to the trouble, you could trace the path the message took backwards through the message headers and complain to whoever relayed it, but IMO it's a waste of time. Just don't get too angry with the Sicilian address, 'cause most likely their address is being faked too.

I would suggest an extra bit of protection between you and this garbage -- MailWasher (shareware, Google and you'll find it fast), which will let you view messages before downloading, and makes for quick deletion of infected messages; it even flags suspected spam and virii. The best part is, you can fake a bounce back to spammers to make it look as if you don't exist, and they spammed an invalid address.

I wouldn't suggest bouncing these virus-infected messages back to the presumed senders -- that's exactly why I keep getting warnings that I'm sending out virii when I'm not.

However, it's very satisfying to bounce back the occasional snotty message I get from some blooming idiot (who uses the name "Stranger") who keeps mailing me the message, "I don't need your viruses."

All you can really do is just delete, delete, delete.

4. Too much spam
I get around 100 unsolicited messages every day. It really ticks me off because I have to spend so much time deleting. I worry that I might accidently delete legitamate messages. Even though I might be intersted in some of the unsolicited messages, I am not going to read them because there are so many. Don't those websites realize that? If I only got ten or so per day, I might actually read them. I know that they have no idea how much other junk you get. I suppose that I fault places that sell your name when you register.

6. I now have a spam filter,
which helps considerably, but I'm still deleting anywhere from 10 to 30 messages per day. Two thirds of my email is spam. It's pretty discouraging.

8. Try setting rules in your Outlook (if you use it)
Send messages that come from people you know and want to hear from into a specific folder. Those mails that come in that don't follow those rules will go into your regular mailbox and should make it much easier to go through. That, coupled with your spam filter, should help a lot.
