1. It's a private school and they have the right to set standards
That being said, going to college is a time when young people start learning to be adults, and that means making choices for yourself. The more restrictive the environment, the more a college fails at it's mission to turn out adults and not just "ambassadors for Christ."

BTW, Jesus wore sandals *everywhere.* I guess he wouldn't be welcome Falwell U. :)

3. The Liberty way or the highway
The administration may also prohibit or restrict student participation in demonstrations, petitions or picketing at places other than on campus, where such participation would contradict or otherwise compromise the principles and policies of Liberty University.

Current policy for movie viewing allows for attendance at theaters but prohibits viewing of movies rated "R", "NC-17" or "X".

Handholding is the only appropriate form of personal contact. Improper personal contact or other forms of public display are considered in poor taste. After dusk, students should not be alone with an individual of the opposite sex in any unlighted area such as the ball fields, parking lots, parked cars, ravine or other wooded areas, etc. This is considered improper social behavior

No music (vocal or instrumental), television, videos and other media, which is offensive (i.e., lewd lyrics, anti-Christian message, etc.) to Liberty's Christian stand will be permitted

Students are to be in their residence halls each night by curfew.

I wouldn't last a week here. To think all of these rules are put in place for people over the age of 18, otherwise known as ADULTS!!!!

How can instrumental music be offensive to "Liberty's Christian Stand?"

24. Man, I wouldn't last a day
Instrumental music offensive to Liberty's Christian stand include:

Frank Zappa's "Jazz from Hell"
Yngwie J. Malmsteen instrumentals
Joe Satriani instrumentals
Neil Peart drum solos

Malmsteen, Satriani and Peart are referred to as gods of their instruments.

4. Here's a good one:

Dress Code for Men

Philosophy of Dress Code
Liberty University trains students from all walks of life for many different professions and, most importantly, for serving as Champions for Christ. For this reason, the University has established a standard of dress for the University community, which is conducive to a Christ-like environment. Cleanliness, neatness, appropriateness, and modesty are important as guiding factors.
Students are expected to dress modestly at all times.

Standard of Dress for MEN
Hair and clothing styles related to a counterculture (as determined by the Deans' Review Committee) are not acceptable. Hair should be cut in such a way that it will not come over the ears, collar or eyebrows at any time. Ponytails for men are unacceptable. Facial hair should be neatly trimmed. Earrings and/or plugs are not permitted on or off campus, nor is body piercing. Questions concerning the standard of dress for men should be addressed to the Dean of Men's Office.

NOTE: RA’s, RD’s, Deans and others will enforce dress code and educate all students regarding what is acceptable and what is not. Questions concerning the standard of dress for men should be addressed to the Dean of Men's Office who will be the final authority.

Class Dress

Attire: Neat slacks; dress shirt with tie or collared shirt, golf/polo shirt or turtleneck--all shirts must be tucked in (discreet logos acceptable, no large writing or logos); dress or dressy casual shoes (no sandal-type shoes ***even though Jesus wore them***), socks, no hats in class or Convocation
When & Where: Classes, Convocation, academic, administrative buildings and church services

Casual Dress

Attire: Neat pants, jeans (no shorts), shirts, wind suits, shoes, sandals, no hats during church services
When & Where: Academic and administrative buildings after 4:30 p.m., cafeteria and church services

Sports Clothes

Attire: Sweats, T-shirts, modest shorts (when wearing spandex, shorts must be worn over them) and athletic shoes
When & Where: David's Place, intramural sports, PE classes, athletics, recreational activities, jogging, sports events and concerts

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I can tell you right now that Jesus was NOT a conservatively-dressed, neat and clean kind of guy.

6. Liberty is LIBERAL compared to PCC
A group of former students compiled this site. Their actual handbook from a couple of years ago is online.

At PCC, the little old ladies in the library use a black marker to censor books and pictures (Michelangelo's DAVID wears black boxer shorts.)

I wish this was a joke, it isn't.

http://www.pensacolachristiancollege.com/rules.htm

Small taste:

Things you won't do during your college experience if you go to PCC:

Rules, rules, rules: Yes, there are many, and quite a few are things you shouldn't be doing anyway, but to put things in perspective, and shed light on what PCC's "standards" really prohibit, check out the following compilation. Please submit your own poignant additions.

You won't...

Stay up all night in a heated discussion about theology.
Take a moonlight walk on the beach.
Get together with a bunch of friends (girls and guys) for a barbecue.
Go to the county fair.
Research any controversial authors.
Hold a meaningful student government position.
Work on a campus newsletter.
Get up before 5:30.
Have a spring break.
Spend Thanksgiving at home.
Form a band.
Get a job at the Gap (girls).
Rent a video.
Own a fish.
See the end of a Monday Night Football game.
Sit on the steps outside your dorm and play a harmonica.
Have a three-day weekend.
Open the window on a nice day.
Have Pizza delivered.
Lock your door.
Have a water-fight.
Pick at the guitar while sitting on your bed.
Go to a church with less than 5000 people.
Listen to Rich Mullins.
Go to the drive-in.
Take a girl out to eat.
Read a Superman comic.
Laugh too loud.
Check the answering machine.
Turn up your stereo.
Wear Birkenstocks.
Go on a road trip.
Surf the internet.
Be given the benefit of the doubt.

17. This is killing me reading this
I can't believe people voluntarily go to these colleges (of course I wonder how voluntary it is in a lot of cases). Some things that made my eyes get REALLY wide:

"If you are still in bed you may receive demerits for not having your bed made (although it is acceptable to make your bed, go back to sleep on top of the made bed while your floorleader is checking room jobs, and then crawl back under the covers after the floorleader exits the room. However, you must wait until the floorleader crosses the threshold before actually beginning to "crawl" back under the covers)."

WTF?

Then this:

There is to be no physical contact between students of the opposite sex, except perhaps on some "dating outings," where hand-holding games are played.

Hand-holding GAMES? Did I miss out on those by going straight past hand holding after eighth grade? LOL!

These two were kinda funny:

"Siblings of the opposite sex should not interact in unchaperoned areas to abstain from the 'appearance of evil.'"

OMG, you mean if me and my brother went there, even WE'D have to be careful? Even though the thought of being sexual with my brother in ANY way makes me want to hurl and I am sure has the same effect on him? Ick ick ick. Why is there even the NEED for this?

"It is proper, although not required, for a young man to give a corsage to his date and for a young lady to give a boutonniere. It is not appropriate for plants, fruit, stuffed animals, and other such items to be brought to Fine Arts programs."

Fruit. Yeah, guys were always bringing me grapefruit and shit.

"No eating food purchased off-campus in a public area."

Wonder what the hell that rule is about? Is there evil food? Ice cream cones? Bananas?

26. It gets worse.
They're not allowed to visit any library except the college library that the old ladies have censored for them. Nursing students have to sign papers saying that they won't let other students look at their textbook (because some of the medical photos are considered "graphic.")

I read about a kid who got expelled from there for having a copy of Cosmo in her suitcase from when she was at home. They put on her record that she was expelled for distributing pornography and she couldn't get another college to accept her.

These are Shrubby's base. :scared:

28. My cousin did the same thing (his parents are fundies)
and he came back sooooo upset. Threatened his parents with committing suicide or running away to NY to be a male prostitute if they didn't drop their demand that he go there.

He wasn't serious about those things (he would have run away first, tho) but they thought he was, so they dropped it. Jeeez.

7. BJU has similar policies
http://www.bju.edu/prospective/expect/index

Students may work in town until 10:25 pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends. Freshmen must have a prayer captain, assistant prayer captain, or upperclassman with them. Sophomores and upperclassmen may work alone.

Abercrombie & Fitch and its subsidiary Hollister have shown an unusual degree of antagonism to the name of Christ and an unusual display of wickedness in their promotions. In protest, we will not allow articles displaying their logos to be worn, carried, or displayed (even if covered or masked in some way).

Each night all students meet for prayer, either as a room or together with several other rooms

Music must be compatible with the University's music standards:
New Age, jazz, rock, and country music is not permitted.
Contemporary Christian music is not permitted (e.g., Michael W. Smith, Stephen Curtis Chapman, WOW Worship, and so forth).

Televisions and DVD/videocassette players are not permitted in the residence halls; computer DVD players may not be used to view movies.

Residence hall students may not watch videos above a G rating when visiting homes in town and may not attend movie theaters

All weapons must be turned in for storage. Trigger locks are required for pistols. Fireworks are not permitted on campus. (can't have fireworks but you can have fuckin' guns!!!)

25. What the fuck is a prayer captain?
That first paragraph looks suspiciously familiar...I know! If you were in the Soviet Army and you wanted to go downtown, you had to go in a group of at least five soldiers and you had to be escorted by your battalion political officer, company political officer, or an officer in the rank of major or above.

Very few Soviet soldiers ever wanted to go downtown under those restrictions. Which was the whole idea.

8. For those folks who think only Muslims have religious fanatics...
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 12:42 AM by Ruffhowse
...in their midsts, the examples listed in this thread should be ample proof that religious fanaticism exists just as strongly here in America, it's just evident in a different form known as Conservative Christianity. And they have the same ultimate agenda, to forcefully convert all others to obey the laws of their religious beliefs. There are numerous influential political and cultural leaders who get a lot of attention in our major media outlets that harbor this secret agenda...for example Rick Santorum. They tend to downplay their more hard core beliefs to gain acceptance and air time, but don't be fooled, their mission is to place this whole country under conservative Christian dominion.
