15. From a Cash Tribute website
This is Johnny Cash from a live performance in 1969:

"Everywhere we go these days, it seems like, all of a sudden, reporters and people will ask us questions -- ask us questions about things that they didn't use to ask. It seems like everyone's concerned about our national problems, about the war in Vietnam -- as we have long been. And they say things like, "How do you feel about the Vietnam situation, the war in Vietnam?"

"I'll tell you exactly how I feel about it. This past January we took our entire show, along with my wife June, we went to Long Bien Air Force Base near Saigon. And--"

(loud cheering from the crowd)

"And a reporter friend of mine asked, said, "That makes you a hawk, doesn't it?" And I said, "No, that don't make me a hawk. No. No, that don't make me a hawk."

(more cheering, not as loud)

"But I said, "If you watch the helicopters bring in the wounded boys, then you go into the wards and sing for 'em and try to do your best to cheer them up so that they can get back home, it might make you a dove with claws."

(wild cheering)

And then he sings a peacenik folk song, "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream."

12. what a fantastic show tonight
heard rerun with Robbins, Janeane, and K vandenHeuvel

it was......lyrical! so upbeat, for the most part, concentrating on what we had to do, from a positive perspective

their voices were so soothing, relaxing

sorry when it ended

4. Toby Keith is not even in the same class as CASH
Johnny Cash was a liberal and social activist in Country music--taking a lot of heat for that--while Toby was still just a hooker's worst nightmare. There was more talent in the Man in Black's little finger than there is in FUTK's whole body.

7. If Johnny Cash came along today
the corporate powers in the music business would blackball him.

I remember when he had that television show back in the 60s. I wonder what would happen today if he had Neil Young and Bob Dylan on singing war protest songs like back then?

8. Irony...

One of the ironies is that Toby Keith tries to style himself in the mold of "the Outlaws." IOW, he openly tries to get people to compare him to Cash, Jennings, amd Nelson. What he doesn't quite seem to get is what being an Outlaw meant, nor does he realize that when the comparison is made, he comes up on the very short end of that particular stick.

10. I am not a huge fan of country music--but
Johnny Cash has an unusual distinctive voice, and I enjoy some of his stuff. (I am surprised that his fan club is so popular, since he has been gone for a while---good for him!)

I have only heard a little bit of TK--it sets my teeth on edge and is the kind of country music I cannot stand.

The Dixie Chicks really seem more like light pop to me--decent voices (in the studio enhanced stuff) but just not my cup of tea--there is a lot of other pop-type stuff that appeals to me more.

Not a huge fan of any country--except for the one and only Patsy Cline--her voice has purity and clarity that sends me to heaven when I feel depressed!

16. Good results
I can understand how some people might not be a huge Johnny Cash fan. I have been since I was just a young brat of 5 or so, but then again...that's just me.
The thing about this polls results is that the Dixie Chicks smoked Toby Keith. The Dixie Chicks have some radio friendly rubbish, but then on the other hand they have some really good roots flavored material. The sisters can play some mean strings (banjo, dobro, mandolin..ect)
As for this Toby Keith, he is just another hack that gives good American roots music a bad name. He will most like be working a car wash in a few years. I will say though, I think there needs to be the Toby Keiths out there for balance.
