Internet Explorer exploits coming
Just warning everybody, and reminding everyone to be safe and secure online.

Slashdot.org discussion (and links) here: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/13/1531240&mode=thread&tid=113&tid=126&tid=172&tid=95

I'm betting it won't be long before the major media outlets pick this story up.

1. And if you prefer avoiding attacks in the first place
...use Mozilla or Firefox.

9. Just make sure you update
they finally found a flaw, and fixed it within a day.

Mozilla 1.7.1, Mozilla Firefox 0.9.2 and Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7.2 Released

The Mozilla Foundation has just released a trio of new Mozilla releases to the fix the Windows shell: security vulnerbility reported earlier. Mozilla 1.7.1, Mozilla Firefox 0.9.2 and Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7.2 contain no new features other than a preference change that disables the shell: protocol handler. Users who have installed the ShellBlock 1.0 XPI patch in all their Mozilla applications do not need to upgrade. Visit the sample exploit page to see if you are at risk. More details and download links are available in the Mozilla Foundation's security bulletin about the shell: exploit.

2. The most popular will always be...

...a target of security holes and hackers.
Mozilla is becoming more popular do to the IE problems and they also had a problem last week.
I think its mainly a problem with the users not being very safe with their computer use.

3. that's true.
but is doesn't change my central message of being aware and up to date. However, any exploits for Mozilla don't have near the impact as I.E. Since M$ has bundled I.E. as the main GUI and browser for the operating system (to avoid the bundling issues of the 90's) and so any exploit on I.E. is a root operating system exploit.

Since Mozilla isn't the operating system its much harder to exploit Mozilla AND assault the OS easily. Using a 3rd party browser (Opera is a good choice as well) gives an extra layer of protection to the operating system.

6. I have to love the irony in this....
With essential MS problems with DOJ being over the internet browser in the first place....now people have strategically gone after that connection...with some pretty good results.

MS is one of the most insidious forces of our modern times....and you have to just grind your teeth when you hear them spout their vision of empowerment.

MS's true nature and history is only one thing....growth...it has been Gates obsession from day 1....that reprehensible pant load that only has one gift in life....that of finding ways to entrench products. This has become the MS business culture and finds them spreading products only if they have the potential to become cancerous. The organization itself has taken on this world wide cancerous nature.

If someone were to truly account for the inefficiencies that have befallen our society as a result of the mandatory use of their products.....I think people could possibly break out of the MS spell.
Here's the quintessential example of how a monopoly stimies true innovation....but as a result of sheer timing and the glamorization of computers and gadgets...no one will ever appreciate just how bad their products are.

And you think things are bad now....just wait to what they have planned for us in the future....

5. Yes and No
Apache has over 60% of the web server market, and it is a free program that any kid can download and pick apart. Yet it is Microsoft's less popular web server that has opened up web sites the most to attack.

More popular doesn't always mean less safe. In this case it is Microsoft's bad design decisions that are putting everyone's data at risk.
