Favorite Ambient/mellow instrumental groups or cds?
I've posted here in the past about my appreciation of Tangerine Dream, but there are many other mellow instrumental groups I enjoy as well. Although I love just about every form of music there is, late evening while kicking back, cruisng the world via the magic box, I usually put the ol' headphones on and mellow out with instrumental magic.

Some of my picks:

B-Tribe
Bruce Becvar
Back To Earth
Vas (not instrumental, but very mellow)
Michael Jones (keyboard artist)
The entire "Solitudes" series
Ulrich Schnauss

To name but a few. There are countless others I have never heard of yet. Hope you can fill me in!

6. Is Hearts in Space still on the air? Used to listen to that.
Favorites now are Art of Noise's Seduction of Claude Debussy and Royksopp's Melody A.M.

10. Echoes-great program!
it's where I found out about Ishq...unfortunately our local NPR station, KOPB, took it off the air several months back! I was bummed, it was a great way to find out about new relaxing music late at night...

13. My own group
I play with a group called Urban Ambience. We're actually more of an art/improv group than pure ambient-- we drag in a lot of found sounds and similar John Cage tricks. But our main purpose in life is to try to do, live and spontaneously, what Eno does in the studio painstakingly. (Obviously we miss a lot of nuance.)

I'm a big fan of psychedelic music and early Krautrock (I just posted a screed about Can in the music to go to sleep to thread), so my preferred flavors of ambient are more groove-oriented and improvisatory, in the mode of Gong or Phaedra-era Tangerine Dream or Another Green World-era Eno.

25. Squeech--
Where you at? Got any UA recorded? Influence/faves list similar to mine, and doing the live thing w/ largely the goals UA had as well. Do drop into beats from time to time, mostly below 90 bpm. Anyhow, sounds cool.

Against above method, have begun to record some thematic long form projects. Currently working on loops and such for Tommorrow Never Knows. Recruiting collaborations locally, w/ distant friends, and now, I guess from DU. Want punk, jazz, bluegrass versions etc. to roll in and out. But also other electronic takes as well, especially live, i.e. no need to multi-track. PM me if you want.

16. Harold Budd
I got hooked on Harold when I first listened to his release called "The Pearl".

Harold has worked with Eno, The Cocteau Twins and Andy Partridge. What's not to like?

:-) Oops

Oh well, since I did it, I'll make it productive. Badalamenti's "Soundtrack from Twin Peaks" is especially mellow and relaxing. Not to mention that it just plain reeks of coolness. Gotta love those vibes!!
