44. Their usage is better, too
American: "I suck at this."

British: "I'm crap at this."

American: "This sucks."

British: "This is so crap."

Their way is better. Our way is so crap.

7. wanker is a beaut
I once had the 10-year-old son of a friend in London explain in very clinical terms why I couldn't call the small pack I was carrying a "fanny pack."

I thought he and his friends would die when I asked if "pooch pouch" was more acceptable.

Then there was the time after dinner with colleagues from Manchester when I pushed myself back from the table and announced, "Man, I'm stuffed." One chap literally blew a mouthful of wine all over the table.

We ignorant Americans!

that the word "cunt" can be tossed around freely. Here if you use that word you might as well have shot the pope or something. We're way to uptight about this word. To them it's no more than us saying "asshole" to one of our pals. Other faves are:

tosser
jobby (poo)
cannae be arsed (can't be bothered, this is my all time favourite :D)
daft cow
bint
going to the bog
and yes, definitely WANKER :D

ah, just go here and read them for yourselves...

not only curses, but it's a fun read :)

Originally British though....it's a shortening of "God's Truth" IIRC and has been around for hundreds of years...i.e. longer than Australia.

11. Arsehole.....and Pissed......and Tosser........and Bugger Off!
If you're pissed in the UK, it means you're drunk. Also, if you're arseholed, that means the same.

You have to be pissed off in order to be angry.

"Arsehole" is so much more satisfying than "asshole", IMHO.

Tosser is the same as wanker.

Now bugger off!

Edited on Tue Aug-26-03 12:57 AM by HEyHEY
Git - It means a silly person
An oily - An oily rag fag - It means a smoke

Allan fotheringham had a great story at last year's Jack Webster Journalism awards. He got fired from a paper once, and on the drive home with his carpool, he suddenly turned and said, "Whatever you do, don't call your boss a cockney git"

26. Cack.........also, Shat
Which seems to be used to mean either "shit" as in "I cacked myself when you jumped out at me" or just generally unclean, as in "These books are covered in cack".

Also, cacky - to be covered in cack.

It also gives pleasing emphasis to the past tense of "to shit" if you say "shat" instead, such as "The bleedin' dog shat on the carpet while we were down the pub!"

39. This is the definition
of "minge" as spoken by my very loquacious and pedantic friend from Scotland, heretofore known as "Mr. Jobby". Hope this helps!!

Mr. Jobby says:
minge is a lady lower hair

Mr. Jobby says:
minging in stinking.

Mr. Jobby says:
ming is the present tense of minging

Mr. Jobby says:
I hope mung is the past-tense, but I'm not sure something can have mung or if it was merely previously minging

Mr. Jobby says:
Also: minging can mean that someone is rather unattractive, but that's only used by rubbish people form sink estates

And there you have it! :D

34. Shag, furry-toothed, anorak, pear-shaped
Was watching Graham Norton last night and he was about to die talking about the Shag (referring to the dance popular in the South.) Andie MacDowell was on, so he was having her teach him how to "shag." The whole audience was about to bust a gut. Would be like if there was a British dance called the screw.

Although not everyone is aware of it,

The English, in order to be thought polite
Change the pronunciation to 'shite'

47. I remember Maggie Thatcher doing that from the podium
A bunch of hooligans were heckling her and she was caught on film returning the "up yours" gesture. Rick from the "Young Ones" did that in an episode.

I remember a photo of VP candidate Nelson Rockefeller giving the finger to a crowd of hecklers in 1976.

Does anybody else remember "good" republicans?

49. Do you know where that V sign comes from?
You probably do, but here goes anyway....

It stems from ye days of olde....

Apparently, in the days of Henry V, the French were so afraid of the English archers that when they caught any in battle they used to chop off their first two fingers, thus preventing them drawing back the bowstring when they were released and returned to the English army.

At the battle of Agincourt the English archers all taunted the French army by waving their two fingers at them as if to say "We've still got 'em, come and take them off us if you think you're hard enough!".

52. 'Geezer'
from Urban Dictionary:

slang for any "salt of the earth" type bloke you might meet in the street.

As heard in the lyrics of The Streets, a British rapper:

"But I get well leery when geezers look at me funny / Bounce ‘em round like bunnies"

"Geezers need excitement / If their lives don't provide them this they incite violence / Common sense / Simple common sense"
