Does it bother anyone else when a store "offers" you a credit card?
The other day at Target I was buying about $60 of stuff, and was offered to open up a charge account with them. Well I need a credit card like a fish needs a bicycle, but I would get a 10% discount, so I'd save 6 bucks. How can I turn down saving 6 bucks? So it's like being given a choice without really having a choice. I would've preferred not to have been asked.
Anyone else feel the same way?

1. I do
Been there, done that. My family is debt-free except for our mortgage and we intend to stay that way. We have credit cards but charge only what we can pay off when the bill comes.

2. Stores are becoming extremely pushy
Every department store I go to now I have to deal with the "Will this be on your (Name of store)?" as if I'm the only one who doesn't have their card. When I say no, I have to endure the entire sales pitch no matter how (politely) I say no.

4. Yep...
That's a good observation about the way they ask the question, like "Of course you've got a Store X card" if not where have you been?

3. I always tell them "no thanks"
I need another bill every month like I need another hole in my head, and I figure those things are just a cleverly-disguised way for them to track what I'm spending my money on, and so they can sell my name to junk mailers (kind of like those "bonus points" programmes too).

5. It's annoying
Like 10% off $12 is worth all the additional paper it adds to my life. I always decline politely as clerks are doing their job. Use only one credit card for simplicity sake and miles.

It really is best to decline these offers as in the long run too many credit cards can have an adverse affect on your credit rating. Even if you don't use them having too high of an available balance may cause you to be declined in the future for some thing you need.

My exception is infrequent when making a rather large purchase such as furniture or applicances. Then I take the 10% and cancel the card quickly.

9. Wow, I didn't know ...
.. that a high available balance could damage your credit rating.

7. My mom works at a department store . .
they get a whopping 50 cents for each person they persuade to sign up for a card.

At Target, i usually answer no before they even ask. :-)

8. I hate those fucking loyalty cards
Every time I shop here, they ask me I say no, then they offer, I say no, then they give me the discount anyway.

10. those same bastards got me!!!!
Same damn store, Target. Okay, I had just bought a house and was buying like $150.00 worth of nothing (seemingly). So I said sure, save 10 % not a bad deal. So I filled out the lousy paperwork. I give it to the lady and ten minutes later she tells me I was declined. I was a victim of credit fraud and had an alert on my name, social security number... So I asked her why, and she is like blah blah blah, call this number. I took the damn number and asked for a phone to call, she said no way. So then I said, well give me back my application, it has personal information on it, that someone could use to fraud me (again). She again said no way. I asked, well, if you aren't giving me a credit card why do you need all my personal information. She said something about needing proof that I authorized them to run my credit. Pissed me off. Of course a year later, I was able to get a car loan for like $18k on the spot, with 2.9% apr. Yea, those bums at target can't frickin risk $150.00 but a Jeep dealership will risk $18k, yea makes a truck load of sense to me...Kevin.

11. Yeah not to mention being able to get a house..
And I know what you mean about how it seems like you can spend a bunch of money on seemingly nothing. I feel like it happens to me even more at the discount stores... I just pull things off the aisles left and right, cause it's "cheap."

That's outrageous that they kept your info too.

12. Infuriates me
I applied for a re-finance mortgage and got a lower rating than expected. The reason...too man store credit cards. Most of them I have never applied for but I was not diligent about ensuring that my rejections of offers were accepted. It's just absurd.

13. I saved $160.00 once when a card was offered----
It was at Jordan Marsh(now Macy's) and there was 20% of on all purchases for that day.

Since I was purchasing something for $800.00 I took their offer and never used the card again.

Who the hell needs another credit card?

14. I hate when they keep asking you to open up an account
When they ask me I ask them if my credit will go through with several bankruptcy's on it and they walk away.

It gets them to leave me alone and I might be lying about the bankruptcy.

16. Target is the worst offender, IMO
I have one credit card and I don't want another one, thank you very much. I hate having to repeat that fact every freaking time I go in there. :argh:

17. Doesn't bother me much
If I have time, and they're giving away gifts for doing it, I'll fill one out, using names like Bruce Springsteen, or Chevy Chase, and just putting in random false information. Doesn't take very long, and I get a flashlight, or set of screwdrivers, etc. out of the deal.
